MSU Splits Day One of the Maroon Classic

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State split day one of the Maroon Classic, sweeping Jackson State before falling to North Texas, 3-0.
The Dawgs are now 9-6 after sweeping Jackson State (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) and losing to North Texas (19-25, 13-25, 25-19).
"We are a work in progress," third-year coach David McFatrich said. "We've definitely improved in some areas, but we have got to really pay attention to some areas where we are not improving as well as we should be. Overall though, we are focused on getting better every day we get in the gym."
For the second game of the Maroon Classic, MSU came out swinging and defeated Jackson State in three sets. During the game, MSU kept the Tigers to 16 points or less each set. Collectively, MSU had 41 kills, a .338 attack percentage and 9 service aces during the match. Sara Maddox led the team with 12 kills and 12.0 points.
To close out day one of the Maroon Classic MSU faced off against North Texas.
MSU could not find its groove throughout the game. The Dawgs fought hard in the first set, earning 13 kills and 3.0 blocks, but fell to the Mean Green, 25-19. MSU struggled in the second set and fell to North Texas, 25-13. In the third set, the Dawgs fought hard collecting 11 kills and 16 digs. Despite North Texas prevailed, 25-19.
"I'm really proud of our team," McFatrich said. "North Texas is a senior-laden team. They are solid and will make some noise in their conference for sure. I love playing games like that because we want to play against teams that are experienced. I think we got better. I am proud of the way we battled. We did give up some points out there, but I am very happy with the stuff I saw today. We have got to play games like that to get better so I'm all for it."
The Maroon Classic concludes on Saturday with MSU facing Southeastern Louisiana at 11:00 a.m. CT.

- Maddox earned 12 kills, a .450 hitting percentage and 12.0 points against Jackson State
- Payton Harris earned 17 digs on Friday, and is now 74 digs away from tying the career digs record.
- Laura Rose Gray earned 8 kills, six block assists and 11.0 points against North Texas.
