No. 25 MSU Blanks No. 23 Tennessee 4-0 In Knoxville
March 24, 2017 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the first time in program history, the 25th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (11-4, 4-3 SEC) shutout the 23rd-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (14-7, 1-6 SEC) 4-0 at UT's Barksdale Stadium. The road victory for MSU was also its first in Knoxville since 1987.
The Bulldogs won their first doubles point on the road this season to take the early 1-0 lead. On court 3, MSU's pair of Madison Harrison and Sara Lizariturry made quick work of UT's Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva 6-1. Following on court 1, the Maroon & White's 11th-ranked duo of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux downed the Volunteers' 52nd-ranked Brittany Lindl and Eve Repic 6-2 to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead.
Court 2 was suspended with the Bulldog tandem of Jennifer Brown and Khrystyna Vozniak trailing 5-4.
As the visiting underdog, State would carry its momentum strongly into singles play, taking all six of the first sets.
On court 3, for her first conference victory of the season, State's Harrison overpowered UT's Sadie Hammond in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to extend the Bulldog lead to 2-0. Following in her own straight-set victory, MSU's 32nd-ranked Lee defeated her seventh ranked opponent on the season in Tennessee's 58th-ranked Lindl, 6-2, 6-1 at the top position in the lineup.
To clinch the match, the Bulldogs' true freshman Rioux ousted the Volunteers' Repic in straight sets - 6-4, 6-2 – at the No. 2 spot, clinching the 4-0 victory for MSU.
The remaining three matches were suspended with the Bulldogs holding leads on all courts. At the No. 4 position, MSU's Anastasia Rentouli led UT's Riley 7-5, 0-4. On court 5, State's Vozniak held a 7-5, 3-2 over her opponent, Johanna Silva. Bulldog Lizariturry was looking to close out at win at No. 6, leading 6-3, 5-5 against UT's Kim Kermet.
"Our girls did an excellent job tonight," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I am excited to see them playing which such confidence and continue to get better each week. We have come a long way this season coming back from injuries and finding our identity as a team. We are in a good place right now and excited about more big challenges ahead. We are definitely very happy about this win. It moves us closer to the goals we have set for this spring."
