March 26, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Despite putting up a big fight at several positions with No. 3 Georgia (13-3, 7-1 SEC) Sunday, the 25th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (11-5, 4-4 SEC) fell in tough 4-0 battle on the road.
Georgia held off an MSU charge in doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. On court 1, MSU's 11th-ranked pair of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux overpowered UGA's 18th-ranked Caroline Brinson and Ellen Perez 6-2. Georgia would claim the two remaining matches by a 6-3 mark as the pair of No. 68 Marta Gonzalez and Mariana Gould defeated MSU's team of Madison Harrison and Sara Lizariturry on court 3, and UGA's No. 28 Elena Christofi and Kennedy Shaffer defeated State's tandem of Jennifer Brown and Khrystyna Vozniak on court 2.
Despite State building several early leads in singles, UGA would maintain its momentum, ultimately taking four of the six first sets.
On court 6, UGA's No. 102 Gould downed State's Lizariturry 6-0, 6-1 to extend the home lead to 2-0. Following on court 3, Georgia's No. 57 Shaffer rallied to grab the first set in a tiebreaker and go on to defeat MSU's Harrison 7-6(2), 6-2 to put UGA up 3-0.
To clinch the match, the Georgia Bulldogs' eighth-ranked Christofi held off the Maroon & White's Rioux 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 on court 2, clinching the 4-0 victory for UGA.
The remaining three matches were suspended, all in the third set.
At the No. 1 position, UGA's No. 26 Perez led MSU's No. 32 Lee 6-7(5), 6-3, 2-1. On court 4, Georgia's No. 59 Brinson held a 6-4, 1-6, 5-0 lead over State's Anastasia Rentouli. State's Vozniak led 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 over UGA's Gonzalez on court 5.
