No. 20 Kentucky Hands No. 33 MSU Loss In Lexington
March 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 33rd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (8-4, 1-3 SEC) fell to 20th-ranked Kentucky (11-2, 3-1 SEC) on Sunday 6-1 as the Bulldogs closed out their first road weekend in 2017 conference play.
Sunday's match was forced indoors due to low temperatures in the Lexington area. The loss marked the fifth consecutive match MSU has faced a ranked foe.
The contest began with the Wildcats taking the doubles point after UK won on courts two and three. UK's Emily Fanning and Justina Mikulskyte defeated Bulldogs Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli, 6-3, at No. 3 before the Wildcat tandem of Morgan Chumney and Akvile Parazinskaite clinched the doubles point against Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak, 6-2 at No. 2. No. 13 Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux's match against No. 5 Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi was suspended with the contest tied at 4-4.
In singles play, MSU would bounce back to tie the match at 1-1 when the 57th-ranked Lee upset No. 16 Sutjiadi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The result for Lee was her 10th dual-match singles victory of the season as the senior earned her fifth ranked singles win of the year.
Following the tie, the homestanding Wildcats responded with three-straight wins to clinch the team victory. MSU's Rentouli dropped her match 6-1, 6-4 to Kentucky's Fanning at the No. 4 spot to make the score 2-1. State's rookie Rioux then fell in a tight match at No. 3 to UK's Adachi, 7-5, 6-4. The Wildcats would then clinch the contest when Parazinskaite held off MSU's Harrison in another close affair at the No. 2 position, 7-6(6), 6-3.
With the clinch and the score in UK's favor at 4-1, Bulldogs Vozniak and Lizariturry would default their matches on courts five and six, both of which got late starts with only four courts available for competition indoors. Vozniak had dropped her opening set, 6-2, while Lizariturry was trailing 3-0 in the first set of her match.
