STARKVILLE, Miss. – The 41st-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (9-4, 2-3 SEC) cruised past the 42nd-ranked Missouri Tigers (10-5, 1-3 SEC) on Friday to post a 4-0 shutout in front of an elated home crowd at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The victory snapped a two-match skid for the Bulldogs.
"It was a very convincing win and our girls played well," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We were a little bit bummed after a couple of losses last weekend and this was a great response to that."
The Bulldogs defended their home court in doubles grabbing the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. On court 2, MSU's tandem of Jennifer Brown and Khrystyna Vozniak recorded their first win on the season after downing Mizzou's pair of Tate Schroeder and Cassidy Spearman 6-2.
Soon after, the 13th-ranked State duo of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux downed the Tiger tandem of Amina Ismail and Bea Machado Santos 6-3 on court 1 to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead. The doubles win for Lee and Rioux improved their overall record to 17-4 on the year.
"In doubles play. we've been tinkering around with the lineup a bit, trying to find the best combination" Greenan said. "Today was solid with the pairs we had. Jasmine and Lisa are doing an outstanding job at the No. 1 position, so we just have to lock down a couple more good pairs."
The remaining court was suspended with the Bulldog tandem of Madison Harrison and Sara Lizariturry tied 4-4 on court 3.
The Bulldogs carried the doubles momentum into singles play, taking five of the six first sets to dominate the Tigers early on.
State's 57th-ranked Lee made quick work of UM's Santos in straight sets - 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 - extending the lead to 2-0 and handing the Tiger her first conference singles loss. The victory for Lee marked her 15th singles win overall on the season. Not long after, MSU's Rioux cruised past Mizzou's Spearman 6-1, 6-1 on court 2 to put the Bulldogs out in front 3-0.
The clinching match would come at No. 6, also in straight sets, where the Bulldog rookie Lizariturry claimed an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Tigers' Clare Raley.
The remaining three matches were suspended with two Bulldogs holding leads and one fighting back. On court 3, State's Harrison led 7-6(3), 1-2 over UM's Schroeder, while at No. 4 MSU's Rentouli led 6-1, 4-3 over the Tigers' Ismail. After a tough first set, the Maroon and White's Vozniak had fought back to even things up 0-6, 6-3 on court 5.
State will look to carry Friday's momentum into Sunday as the Bulldogs host No. 15 Arkansas at 1 p.m. CT to continue Southeastern Conference action. The Razorbacks won 4-0 at Ole Miss on Friday.
"Arkansas has won their last 10 matches and they are on a run here," Greenan said. "We need to be ready and it is going to be a battle. If we compete like I know like our girls can, then I think we have a chance."
