No. 24 MSU Women’s Tennis Routs UL Lafayette 7-0
February 11, 2017 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its first outing at home since Jan. 22, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (3-1) defeated UL Lafayette (1-4) at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre Saturday in a rout, 7-0.
The victory for the Bulldogs extended their win streak over the Ragin' Cajuns to 20-straight and their all-time record against ULL to 20-1.
The Bulldogs began Saturday's match with victories at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions. State's tandem of freshman Sara Lizariturry and sophomore Anastasia Rentouli made quick work of Louisiana's Carla Ortego and India Shiaelis, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. To clinch the doubles point, MSU's eighth-ranked duo of senior Jasmine Lee and freshman Lisa Marie Rioux won five games in a row to oust the Ragin' Cajuns' Lucile Belebarre and Kelly Drew, 6-3, on court one.
"I think Lisa has learned a lot from Jasmine this season," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Jasmine is a senior and great player. With Lisa being a freshmen and it was her first match outdoors, I think Jasmine helped pick her up. When those two are both on they are one of the best teams in the country and can beat anyone on any given day."
Making their first appearance as a tandem since the 2016 NCAA Doubles Championship Round of 16, State's duo of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak's match was suspended on court two.
"They were great for us last year, making it to the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the Round of 16," Greenan said about the duo's return on Saturday. "Khrystyna is coming off of an injury and had the right attitude about it today with only getting to play doubles."
MSU carried its momentum into singles play, taking five of the first six sets before ultimately winning at all positions.
Keeping the momentum going, State's 44th-ranked Lee retired Louisiana's Delabarre 6-0, 6-2 on court one, extending the home team's lead to 2-0. MSU's rookie Lizariturry followed close behind, defeating Ragin' Cajun Shiaelis in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 to give the Bulldogs a commanding 3-0 lead.
To clinch the match, State's Rentouli posted a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory against Louisiana's Abby Johnson at No. 4. The singles win was Rentouli's seventh of the season and 36th of her young Bulldog career.
The Bulldogs would claim wins in the final three matches of the day as well. At the No. 3 position, MSU's Rioux held off the Ragin' Cajuns' Drew 6-4, 6-3. State's Harrison defeated Louisiana's Alexandra Way 6-4, 6-3 on court two. At No. 6, State's Jennifer Brown came from behind to defeat Louisiana's Ortega 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 to complete the Bulldog sweep.
