No. 24 MSU Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader

STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its only twinbill of 2017, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (5-1) blanked South Alabama (8-2) 4-0 before downing Alcorn State (1-7) 6-1 Sunday in front of a nice home crowd and in spring-like conditions at A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
The Bulldogs began the day by winning in doubles once again, as the tandem of eighth-ranked Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux captured a 6-2 victory against USA's Patricia Martins and Laura Valkova on court 1. At the No. 2 position, MSU's duo of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak downed the Jaguars' duo of Laura Matuskova and Alina Zolotareva 6-4 to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead. On court 3, Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli's match was suspended at 4-2 in favor of the Bulldogs.
In singles action, the 44th-ranked Lee made quick work of USA's Alexandria Stiteler 6-1, 6-1 on court 1 to extend State's lead to 2-0. Following close behind at the No. 3 position, MSU's rookie Rioux upended USA's Valkova 6-2, 6-1 to give the Bulldogs a solid 3-0 lead.
MSU's Harrison then went the distance to clinch the match over the Jaguars' Monica Mitta with a tough 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 triumph.
The remaining matches for Bulldogs Rentouli, Lizariturry and Jennifer Brown were suspended after Harrison's victory on court 2 which clinched the 4-0 victory, snapping an eight-match winning streak for South Alabama.
In the afternoon cap of Sunday's doubleheader, State kept its momentum by quickly claiming the doubles point against Alcorn State. State's duo of Brown and Caroline Kelly blanked the Lady Braves' Marlene Maier and Veronika Pytlikova 6-0 on court 3. At the No. 1 position, MSU's eighth-ranked duo of Lee and Rioux also shut out Alcorn State's Daria Chemodanova and Natalia Parchowska 6-0 to clinch the doubles point and give the Bulldogs 1-0 lead. The remaining match on court 2 was suspended 5-0 in favor of MSU.
In singles, the No. 44 Lee breezed over the Lady Braves' Bianca Birkenstock 6-0, 6-1 on court 1 to extend MSU's lead to 2-0. At the No. 5 position, Lizariturry ousted Alcorn State's Anastasia Vaganova 6-0, 6-1 to give State a 3-0 lead.
The MSU sophomore Rentouli then clinched the match by not losing a game in her 6-0, 6-0 triumph over the Lady Braves' Klavdija Bukovec on court 3.
State would claim wins in two of the remaining three matches of the day as well. At the No. 2 position, the Bulldogs' Rioux won five-straight games in the first set to go on and win 6-2, 6-2 versus ASU's Chemodanova. On court 4, MSU's Vozniak ousted Alcorn State's Parchowska 6-3, 6-4, in her first singles outing since May 2016. Providing Alcorn State's lone point of the afternoon, Maier defeated State's Kelly 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.
"I think we are making progress, we were a little stronger today than last week," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We did better in doubles today and the girls took care of business."
