Pichaikool One Stroke Off Lead Through First Day at Quail Valley
October 23, 2017 | Men's Golf
VERO BEACH, Fla. – Peng Pichaikool's stellar day on the links put Mississippi State in the middle of the standings after Monday's opening two rounds at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
Pichaikool lit up Quail Valley Golf Club to a tune of a 9-under 135 that put him in a tie for third and just a stroke off the lead entering Tuesday's final round.
"Peng played steady all day and was an anchor for our team," head coach Dusty Smith said.
Pichaikool started his day shooting a 5-under 67 that tied him for second after the opening round. He came back in the afternoon with a 68 to sit behind only Memphis' Brad Bawden and Notre Dame's Kevin Conners, the clubhouse leaders at 10-under.
He guided MSU to a pair of 5-under 253s to close the day at 10-under-par and in eighth place in the team standings.
"Today was a tough day for our team. I thought we did a good job competing, but we did not do the small things well," Smith said. "We have to have better effort on the par 5s tomorrow in order for us to be successful."
In his first tournament of the season, senior Taylor Bibbs got off on the right foot with rounds of 70 and 72 to end the day tied for 30th at 2-under.
"Taylor Bibbs was tough as nails down the stretch, birdieing his last four holes of the second round," Smith said. "That was huge for our team."
Sophomore Garrett Johnson fired a pair of even-par 72s, while Taylor Grant finished a stroke behind him at day's end. Austin Rose filled out the lineup, shooting a 6-over 150 in a tie for 67th.
The 15-team field is led by South Florida, who shot 24-under on Monday.
MSU's final tournament of the fall closes Tuesday with the final round set to begin at 7:00 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
"We need to come out with a focused mindset in the morning and embrace the opportunity in front of us," Smith said.
