October 16, 2017 | Men's Golf
DULUTH, Ga. – Sophomore Garrett Johnson led Mississippi State men's golf to fifth place following Monday's opening two rounds at the Autotrader Collegiate Classic, firing a pair of 72's to end the day tied for sixth at even par.
"Garrett played solid all day and managed his game nicely," Smith said.
Monday's opening round saw MSU shoot a 296 at par-72, 6,694-yard Berkeley Hills Country Club, and the team improved to shoot a 292 in the afternoon for a 12-over-par finish.
"I thought our guys did a nice job battling all day," head coach Dusty Smith said. "The conditions were tough today with cool temperatures and some wind."
Sophomore Peng Pichaikool and senior Taylor Grant each fired a 4-over 148 and finished the day in a tie for 29th.
Junior Austin Rose shot a stroke above them, a 149, to finish tied for 36th. Freshman Cameron Clarke rounded out the Bulldog lineup, shooting 8-over-par to sit in a tie for 55th.
Georgia Southern leads the field after shooting an 18-under 558 Monday. Hosts Georgia State, Notre Dame and Lipscomb sit between Mississippi State and the leader.
Play resumes from Berkeley Hills Country Club Tuesday at 7:05 a.m. CT, and State will tee off the third and final round at 7:15.
"Tomorrow is a big day for our team," Smith said. "We get another opportunity to compete and to add to the foundation.
"We need to do a better job with the small details. They add up to a lot over three rounds of play."
