STARKVILLE, Miss. – It's week two for the Mississippi State track and field program.
After getting the year started in Birmingham last week, the Bulldogs travel to Nashville, Tenn. Friday and Saturday for the Vanderbilt Invitational. MSU will meet 17 other opponents from around the southeast, including two nationally ranked opponents from the SEC in No. 4/2 Arkansas and No. 22/24 South Carolina.
The Bulldogs will compete in five field events and four running events on Friday, followed by an additional two field events and 21 running events on Saturday.
Junior Logan Boss will be making her 2017 debut in the high jump at 4 p.m. Friday. Last season she finished third in the event at SEC Indoor Championships with a personal-best leap of 1.82m.
"This is another opportunity for us to improve and see how we fare against a few nationally ranked teams," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "We had a lot of good performances last week, both individually and as a team. There is still a lot of room for us to improve, and I think this weekend will be a great challenge for us."
A few Bulldogs began their weekend Wednesday in the Birmingham CrossPlex, competing in the 2017 Samford Multi.
Senior JaQuarius Wilson took second in the heptathlon with a score of 4,706. His freshman teammate Clark Griffith got his first taste of the collegiate heptathlon, finishing sixth with a score of 4,466. Griffith broke his personal best in the shot put with a throw of 11.43m, and competed in five events for the first time in Maroon and White.
In the women's pentathlon, sophomore Zaria Tillman set a new personal record overall score of 3,714 to finish third. Tillman set new personal bests in four of the five events of the pentathlon, including the 60mH (8.77), high jump (1.56m), long jump (5.46) and shot put (11.34m).
Freshman Shayla Broughton also got her first taste of the pentathlon, and set new personal bests in three events, including 60mH (8.92), high jump (1.64m) and the long jump (5.56m). She competed in the shot put and 800m events for the first time in her college career.
