Newcomers Lead MSU To Top Five Finish at Bearcat Invitational

CINCINNATI, Ohio – For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the Mississippi State men's golf team opened a campaign with back-to-back Top 5 finishes after tying for fourth at the Bearcat Invitational.
Lead by newcomers freshmen Garrett Johnson and transfer Grant Motter, MSU posted a round-low score of 284 on Tuesday.
"I'm really pleased with the way our team played today in the final round. Any time you post the low score of the day it's good," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "Our two new guys, Garrett (Johnson) and Grant (Motter), played some consistent golf for three rounds and led our team."
Johnson matched his second round even-par 71 with a third round 71 to place him at one-over for the tournament and a tie for 7th finish.
Joining Johnson in the Top 10 was Motter, who finished the two-day tournament strong with a final round 70 to tie him for 10th.
Senior Jackson Dick shot a final round 75 to solidify a tie for 20th position.
Taylor Bibbs made it four Bulldogs in the top 25 after firing a third round 71 to finish in a tie for 25th.
Junior Taylor Grant shot a 74 en route to placing tied for 39th.
Rounding out the MSU lineup, Ross Bell improved seven shots from round two to round three to card a 72 to tie for 44th.
"There's always room for improvement, but this gives us a little positive momentum as we move into the Jerry Pate Invitational next week," Homan said.
Michigan State won the team tournament while Ohio State's Will Grimmer won the individual title.
MSU returns south on Oct. 3 to take part in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham.
