MSU's 75th-ranked Anastasia Rentouli remains undefeated on day 2 of Furman Invite.
MSU Women’s Doubles Teams Win Titles At Furman Invite
September 24, 2016 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – With the second day of the Furman Invite completed, the Mississippi State women's tennis team finished 3-0 in doubles and 4-2 in singles, with State's duo of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux and the tandem of Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli highlighting action, each capturing the doubles title of their respective draws.
"Our doubles was absolutely outstanding this morning," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Jasmine and Lisa played nearly flawless in their 8-0 win over a very strong Vanderbilt team. Madison and Jennifer were nearly as dominant in their 8-1 win over a solid Wake Forest team. Sara and Ana were extremely solid in their win over another talented Wake Forest pair. The tournament assigned all three of our matches next to each other so it was very much like a dual match. The girls fed off each other and played with awesome integrity. If today was any indicator of what we are capable of in doubles then I think we could win the doubles point against any team in the nation this spring. I could not be more pleased with the performance of our three pairs this morning."
Saturday started off with the senior Lee and freshman Rioux teaming to impressively blank Vanderbilt's Christina Rosca and Astra Sharma 8-0 to claim the Flight 1 doubles title. State's duo of freshman Lizariturry and sophomore Rentouli also finished doubles undefeated this weekend, ousting Wake Forest's Courtney Meredith and Joanna Zalewski 8-5 to win the doubles title in Flight 3.
MSU's tandem of juniors Jennifer Brown and Madison Harrison claimed the consolation crown in Flight 2 with a convincing 8-1 victory over Wake Forest's Samantha Asch and Emma Davis.
In singles Saturday, MSU went 4-2, with Bulldogs moving into Sunday's finals in the top three flights of this weekend's tournament.
MSU's Lee, ranked eighth nationally, ousted Clemson's 46th-ranked Ayan Broomfield in the Flight 1 semifinals 6-2, 6-3 Saturday and will match up with North Carolina's Makenna Jones on Sunday in the title match. In Flight 2, State's 84th-ranked Harrison outlasted Furman's Katty Weymouth 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. She will face Clemson's Marie Leduc Sunday for the crown in that draw.
In Flight 3, State's 75th-ranked Rentouli rallied from a set down to roll past Furman's Katarina Kozarov in the final two sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. On Sunday, she is set to play Vanderbilt's Christina Rosca in that championship match. Also in Flight 3 Saturday, the MSU newcomer Rioux advanced to the consolation finals after defeating Wake Forest's Anna Ulyaschenko 6-4, 6-4. Rioux will face Florida State's Nandini Das on Sunday.
In Flight 5, the MSU rookie Lizariturry fell in the semis to Wake Forest's Zalewski 6-1, 6-1. She will match up with Wake Forest's Luisa Fernandez in the 3rd place match on Sunday. MSU's Caroline Kelly fell to Furman's Karlee Bryde 6-1, 6-2 in Flight 6 and will continue consolation action Sunday.
"For the second day in a row we carried positive momentum from doubles into singles and once again we were able to pull out a couple of tough three-set battles for a winning record in singles, Greenan said. "We are seeing areas we need to improve but overall it has been a strong first couple days of our tournament season. Our 16-5 tournament record so far is very encouraging and now we need to finish strong tomorrow and battle for a few more tournament titles."
