State’s Jasmine Lee Claims Singles Crown At Furman Invite
September 25, 2016 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The final day of the Furman Invite was put in the books Sunday, with Mississippi State's Jasmine Lee capturing the singles title in Flight 1 of the three-day tournament.
Lee, ranked eighth nationally, ousted North Carolina's Makenna Jones in straight sets - 6-3, 6-2 - to claim the singles championship, ending a perfect 3-0 weekend at the event.
In Flight 2, MSU's 84th-ranked Madison Harrison fell to Wake Forest's 76th-ranked Emma Davis 7-6, 6-0 in the finals of that draw.
State's 75th-ranked Anastasia Rentouli was upended by Vanderbilt's Christina Rosca 6-2, 6-3 in the Flight 3 championship match. Also in Flight 3 Sunday, MSU newcomer Lisa Marie Rioux won the consolation title in a walkover after her opponent, Florida State's Nandini Das, withdrew.
In Flight 5, MSU rookie Sara Lizariturry fell in that draw's 3rd place match to Wake Forest's Luisa Fernandez 6-2, 6-3.
MSU's Caroline Kelly ended her weekend on a high note in Flight 6, cruising past Vanderbilt's Payton Robinette 6-1, 6-1 in Round 3 of that draw.
"I am proud of the overall effort and results of our girls this weekend," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We knew it was going to be a challenging event with the level of competition we were facing and I am pleased with our 18-8 overall record. Our performance in doubles was particularly encouraging. I feel like we are further ahead than this time last year with selecting our doubles lineup and our level of play. Jasmine's performance winning the top singles draw without losing a set and winning the top doubles draw with Lisa was a nice highlight for us. I am proud of how Jasmine is stepping up and taking her game and leadership role as a senior seriously. Our freshmen came away with valuable experience and we have a better idea of where we need to focus to develop this team and maximize our talent"
Overall this weekend, State claimed the title in one singles draw and two in doubles, while also placing finalists in two other singles draws. Next up for State will be the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, the first major of the college tennis season, to be held Oct. 1-9 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
