
Freitas Breaks School Record At SEC Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Taking third and fourth in the 3000m run, Mississippi State track and field runners Marta Freitas and Cornelia Griesche broke the school record to bring home 11 points for the Bulldogs on day one at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
“Today was a strong day for our athletes,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “It was a good way to start the SEC Championships and I feel we're in a positive spot headed into tomorrow.”
Recording a time of 9:22.18, Freitas brought home a third-place finish, while Griesche grabbed fourth place with a time of 9:23.88 that is now the second-best time in program history.
Running with Freitas and Griesche were freshman Antonia Hehr and Shannon Fair, who finished 13th and 16th, respectively. Improving her personal best, Hehr broke the freshman record in the 3000m run for the second time this season with a time of 9:40.50. Clocking a time of 9:45.67, Fair also recorded a personal-best.
In her final SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, senior Madison Milhoan posted a time of 2:09.51 in the 800m run to qualify for Saturday's finals. Her time is the fourth-best in program history.
Ffion Price and Freitas will be back on the track tomorrow for the mile run finals after both finished in the Top 3 of their heats to automatically advance. Price ran a time of 4:43.22 to finish third overall, while Freitas clocked a time of 4:44.38, finishing sixth.
Making her SEC Indoor Championships debut, Zaria Tillman finished 13th in the pentathlon after scoring 2,663 points. She recorded a personal-best time of 8.92 in the 60m hurdles earning 927 points to start the pentathlon. Tillman had no score in the high jump, but tossed 32-06.50 for 524 points in the shot put. Scoring 522 points, Tillman jumped 15-11.50 in the long jump prior to running a time of 2:30.22 the 800m run for 690 points.
Ste'yce McNeil went on to place 11th in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.33. Immediately behind McNeil was teammate Tiffany Flynn in 12th with a time of 8.35.
Also on the track, senior Kimari Martin posted a time of 55.27 to finish 25th in the 400m finals.
In the field, Leah Lott brought home an 11th-place victory after a leap of 19-03.50 in the long jump, while Haley Reynolds threw 43-10.50 in the shot put to finish 14th.
Going into day two of the championships, MSU is in seventh place with 11 points. Georgia leads with 25 points.
Action on the track will resume tomorrow with Price and Freitas in the mile run finals at 3:50 p.m. Field events for MSU will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the pole vault, high jump, triple jump and weight throw.
