February 28, 2016 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Yesterday Marta Freitas ran a Mississippi State record in the 3000m run. Today she is the 2016 SEC Indoor Track & Field Champion in the mile run.
“I'm really excited about the title. I don't believe that I actually won yet,” Freitas said. “I just always look to get better. I trusted a lot in coach [Houston] Franks. He challenged me doing four races this weekend. I'm just really happy."
Freitas recorded a personal-best time of 4:38.21 to earn her win. Her time ranks third in the Mississippi State record books. Running alongside Freitas in the event was Ffion Price who finished 10th with a time of 4:58.98.
Mississippi State finished the championships with a total of 42 points to finish ninth. Host Arkansas brought home the team victory with 110 points.
“I've never seen a team fight as hard as this team has this weekend,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “I'm so incredibly proud of these girls and the way they competed all weekend.”
Bringing home third in the 5000m run, Cornelia Griesche ran a time of 16:32.36 in the event. This was Greische's second third-place victory of the weekend after finishing third Friday night in the 3000m run.
Also on the track, the distance medley relay team, comprised of Marta Freitas, Kimari Martin, Madison Milhoan and Ffion Price posted a program second-best time of 11:15.89 to record a third-place finish.
Milhoan earned one point for the Maroon and White in the 800m run after recording a time of 2:09.65 to finish eighth.
