Sato Tallies Career Night, MSU Falls In Five To Arkansas

STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the next to last game of the season, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (13-18, 5-11) dropped a five-set heartbreaker to the Arkansas Razorbacks (8-20, 6-10) on Sunday afternoon at Newell-Grissom.
"When it comes down to it, Arkansas made the plays needed to win this match. We had some great moments throughout the match, but could not put it all together, especially in the final moments," MSU coach David McFatrich said.
The opening set saw seven lead changes and 22 ties as MSU downed the Razorbacks, 28-26. Freshman Emily Hill landed 8 of her match-high 22 kills in the opener, while Evie Grace Singleton added 6 more to help push the Bulldogs over the top.
In the second set, MSU opened on a 7-3 run and seemed poised to break out to a 2-0 lead in the match. However, the Razorbacks stormed back to even things up and eventually pulled away late to win 25-19, heading to the locker room tied at 1-1.
More of the even play continued after the break as MSU pulled out a 25-21 victory in the third. Jelena Vujcin made her presence felt in the set with 6 kills and a block. Riley Duzenack and Singleton each had an ace from the service to aid the Bulldog offense.
Arkansas raced out to a 20-15 lead in the fourth before the Maroon and White made a late rally to draw within three. The Razorbacks would hold on and take the fourth, 25-21, sending MSU to its second-straight fifth-set contest. Hill added 7 kills in the set while Bali Leffall-Young, Jazmyne Johnson and Blossom Sato all tallied 2 blocks.
MSU jumped out to a 12-8 lead and had its eyes on its sixth SEC victory of the season before the Hogs came storming back to take the set, 16-14, and the match, 3-2.
"Now we have to regroup and set our sights on finishing this season strong against Georgia. The message is to finish the year on a high note and send out our seniors with a win."
The Bulldogs will close out the 2016 season on Saturday, Nov. 26, as they host Georgia on Senior Day. First serve is set for noon CT on the SEC Network +, with festivities before the match to honor MSU seniors Chelsea Duhs, Jazmyne Johnson, Bali Leffall-Young, Evie Grace Singleton and Cheyenne Spell.

MSU Adds Another Blocking Record To Its Resume…
With 12.0 total blocks on the night, Mississippi State earned its 11th match of the 2016 season with double-digit blocks. The 2016 squad now holds the school record for most matches with double-digit blocks in a season.
Sato Tallies Career Night Against Arkansas…
Blossom Sato's standout sophomore season continued on Sunday afternoon. The Santa Monica, Calif., native tallied a career-high 58 assists, earning the second 50-assists match of her career. Her 58 were the most since Paris Perret tallied 59 against LSU on Sept. 28, 2012.
Johnson Up To Sixth On MSU's Blocks List…
Jazmyne Johnson kept her impressive 2016 season on the block rolling on Sunday, as she tallied a team-high 6 for her 11th match of the season with at least 5 denials. She passed Temeka Thomas (1997) for sixth on the MSU single-season blocks list.
Singleton Continues To Dominate The Service Line…
Tallying a trio of aces, senior Evie Grace Singleton now has 51 aces on the year. She is the first Bulldog with a 50-ace season since Eva Kriegel had 54 during the 2007 campaign.
Hill Dominates The Bulldog Attack…
Emily Hill led the way for the Dogs on Sunday night with 22 kills, her second match of the year with 20-plus kills. The 22 was two kills shy of her career high and moved her season total up to 362, which remains second in the conference amongst freshmen and eighth overall in the league.
She remains at third on the freshman kills list, but did move up to third on the freshman attacks list with 989, passing Rachel Cooper (2002) and Taylor Scott (2012).
