Singleton, Johnson Lead MSU To Victory To Close Out 2016 Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Evie Grace Singleton finished her Bulldog career the way she started it on Aug. 28, 2015. Leading the Bulldogs to victory.
Behind the impressive play of seniors Singleton and Jazmyne Johnson, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (14-18, 6-12) won back-to-back senior days for the first time since 2005-06, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs (13-18, 1-17), 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14).
The win was also the 11th home victory this season for the Bulldog, setting a new program record. The previous record of 10 was set in 2006 and tied in 2015.
Singleton's 21 kills closed out her final season with 499 kills, the second-highest total in program history. Johnson starred on the defensive side of the ball, tallying her 13th match this season with at least five blocks, as her 8 total closed her career at 136, the fourth-most in school history.
"I cannot say enough about how proud I am of this team for going out there and getting this win today. Our goal was to send our seniors out on a high note and we did just that," McFatrich said. "From Evie to Jaz to everyone in between, we played a solid match from the very beginning. I know this season did not go exactly how we wanted it to, but we ended with a win, sent the seniors out on top and created some momentum heading into the offseason."
Senior day opened with MSU winning a tight first set, 25-22. Singleton had a set-high six kills while Johnson, Emily Hill and Jelena Vujcin each had a block to put the home-standing Bulldogs over the top.
MSU went in the locker room up 2-0 after winning the second set by another score of 25-22. Singleton added five kills and two blocks to Hill's set-high six kills. Johnson was again a force at the net with two more denials. MSU totaled four aces in the set with one each coming from Singleton, Hill, Cheyenne Spell and Riley Duzenack.
The Maroon and White Bulldogs came out of the locker room red hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. However, Georgia would fight back and eventually cut MSU's lead to 2-1, taking the third frame by a score of 25-22. Singleton and Hill continued to deal on the offensive end, both tallying five kills.
To finish off the season, MSU opened the fourth and final set on a 13-3 run and never looked back, winning 25-14. Johnson had five total blocks to secure the MSU win. Senior Chelsea Duhs landed three kills in her final set as a Bulldog to add to Singleton's five and Hill's four.
Behind Singleton was Hill's 20 kills, her second-straight match with 20 kills and third of the season. Blossom Sato tallied her second 50-assist contest in as many matches, closing out her sophomore season with a career-best 968 assists. That total is the most by a Bulldog since Suzanne Horner earned 978 in 2013.
MSU starred from the service line yet again this season, tallying its fifth match of the year with at least nine aces. Singleton's trio of aces led the way, while Duzenack and Spell each tallied two.

State's Saturday afternoon victory marked the sixth conference win of the season. That total ties for fourth in the MSU record books. MSU also recorded six SEC wins last year and in 2005.
MSU Closes Out A Stellar 2016 Blocking Campaign…
Now that it is all set and done, the 2016 season will be looked at as one of the best blocking seasons in school history. State finished with 260.5 blocks, which stands eighth in the school record books. The Bulldogs had 12 matches with at least 10 blocks this season, which stands as the most in school history.
The 2016 Bulldogs also finished with the fourth-most block assists (395) and the 10th-highest blocks per set clip (2.07) in school history.
2016 Also The Year Of The Bulldog Attack…
Often overlooked has been the standout play of the Bulldogs' offense this season. State finished the season with 1,649 kills, the fourth-most in school history. Add to that a .214 attack percentage (sixth-highest) and 4,258 attack attempts (ninth-most) to round out the 2016 campaign.
Assisting that attack has been MSU's setting game, which has totaled 1,543 assists. That total stands third in the school record books.
Service Line Supremacy For The Bulldogs Yet Again…
On the day, MSU tallied nine aces, coming one shy of tying the team's season high. It is the fifth time this year that State has tallied at least nine aces in a match. Leading the way was Evie Grace Singleton, who had a trio of aces, while Cheyenne Spell and Riley Duzenack each turned in two.
MSU's Big Three Finishes Impressive 2016 Season…
The 2016 season for the Bulldogs on offense all came down to three key players: Evie Grace Singleton, Emily Hill and Jelena Vujcin. Singleton (499), Hill (382) and Vujcin (318) made up 73 percent of MSU's offense this season and marked the first time in over decade that the Bulldogs have had three players with at least 300 kills in a season.
Singleton and Hill became the first players since Caitlin Rance (403) and Ashley Newsome (338) to tally at least 400 and 325 kills in a season.
Singleton Caps Outstanding Career With One Last Show…
In her final match as a Bulldog, Evie Grace Singleton did not disappoint. Not one bit. With a match-high 21 kills and 3 aces, Singleton finished the season with 499 kills and 54 aces. She finishes second on MSU's single-season kills list, while breaking into the Top 10 for aces and finishing in a tie for ninth.
Singleton also owns the school record for most attacks in a season, as she closes out 2016 with 1,398.
Johnson Shines Bright In Final Match As A Bulldog…
Jazmyne Johnson has made her presence known as one of the best blockers in the SEC and on Saturday, she sealed that with a standout performance. Johnson led all players with 8 blocks, her 13th match of the year with at least five blocks. She closes out her senior season with 136 total blocks, which stands fourth on the MSU single-season list. She also finished the year with 113 block assists, good for a tie for third in the MSU record books.
Future Is Bright For Freshman Phenom Emily Hill…
From day one, Emily Hill has established herself as one of the best freshmen in school history. On Saturday, that first season in the Maroon and White came to a close with her name on prominent display in the MSU freshman record books. Her 382 kills finished third, the highest total by a freshman since 2013. She tallied 1,031 attacks, which also stands third in school history by a rookie.
She also came on strong late in the blocking game, as she finished the season with 57 total blocks, which is tied for 10th in the MSU freshman record book.
Duzenack Closes Out Impressive Freshman Campaign…
Riley Duzenack also had an impressive freshman season, as she finished with 424 assists and 29 aces. Her assists total finishes sixth in the MSU freshman record books, while she capped the year tied for eighth in aces.
Another Solid Showing From Sato…
Blossom Sato finished her sophomore season with her second-straight 50-assist match of the season. Her 51 assists led all players on Saturday and capped her season total at 968, besting her 2015 total of 872. She will enter the 2017 season with 1,840 assists, which hold strong at seventh on the MSU career list.
