The Bulldogs will be looking for their third-straight victory against Ole Miss on Wednesday.
MSU, Ole Miss Set For Magnolia State Showdown At The Griss
November 15, 2016 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – When it comes to rivalry matches in collegiate athletics, there are few that are as exciting as when Mississippi State and Ole Miss take the court. On Wednesday, it will be a showdown for dominance in the Magnolia State, as the Bulldogs (12-17, 4-10 SEC) host the Rebels (15-12, 4-10 SEC) at Newell-Grissom.
First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT, with Tiffany Greene and Dain Blanton on the call for the SEC Network broadcast. Fans can also access the match online at WatchESPN.com or on their phone/tablet through the ESPN app.
"I've said it before, but there is nothing like the rivalry between Mississippi State and Ole Miss," MSU coach David McFatrich said. "We're not only excited to be back at home in front of our amazing fans, but to play in such a huge match against Ole Miss. We have a chance to end this season on a high note and it all begins tomorrow night at The Griss."
MSU will be looking for its third-straight win against the Rebels, as State swept the season series last year, winning 3-0 in Oxford and 3-1 in the 2015 season finale at home. It would mark the longest winning streak for MSU and Ole Miss since taking six-straight matches from 2004-06.
The meeting will also be the third between McFatrich and Ole Miss head coach Steve McRoberts, with McFatrich taking both meetings last year, 3-0 and 3-1. McFatrich was an assistant under McRoberts at Central Arkansas from 2007-10 before taking the head job in 2011.
A victory would also put State's home win total at 10 on the season, which would tie last year and 2006 for the most home wins in program history. The Maroon and White have never before earned back-to-back seasons with at least 10 home wins.
Looking to make that win happen will be the trio of Evie Grace Singleton, Emily Hill and Jazmyne Johnson. The senior-freshman combo of Singleton and Hill have led the Bulldog offense throughout the 2016 season, topping the team with 447 and 322 kills, respectively. Singleton's 447 stands second in the SEC and has tied for second-most in MSU history, while Hill's total is second amongst all SEC freshmen.
Singleton has also been a star from the service line, totaling an SEC-best 47 aces, which stood 14th in the nation.
Johnson has been the key to State's defensive success in 2016, as her 119 total blocks lead the team and stand fourth in the conference. Her total blocks are the most by a Bulldog since Ashley Newsome recorded 137 in the 2010 season. Johnson currently stands tied for seventh with Ashley Newsome's 2009 season on MSU's single-season list.
The Dogs remain at home, hosting the Arkansas Razorbacks (6-20, 4-10 SEC) on Sunday, Nov. 20. First serve is set for 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the SEC Network +, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.

MSU Aims To Continue In-State Dominance…

Dogs Perfect In NCAA GSR Yet Again ...
The NCAA Graduation Success Ratings were released on Tuesday and for the second-straight year, the Bulldogs received a perfect rating of 100. It marks the fifth time in program history that State has earned a perfect score on the NCAA GSR.
MSU is also one of just six volleyball programs in the SEC this year to score perfect on the GSR, joining LSU, Ole Miss, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Moving Up The SEC Wins Chart…
A successful Wednesday could mean big things for the Bulldogs in terms of their history of wins in the SEC. A victory would move the Dogs to five conference wins on the year, tying for sixth on MSU's SEC wins chart.
Old Friends Meet Yet Again…
MSU coach David McFatrich and Ole Miss coach Steve McRoberts are very much familiar with each other when they meet on Wednesday. McFatrich was an assistant for McRoberts at Central Arkansas from 2007-10 before taking the head job in 2011. McFatrich is currently 2-0 against McRoberts as a head coach, both wins coming last year.
Record Crowds Coming To The Griss In 2016…
Since his arrival last year, MSU coach David McFatrich has promised to make Newell-Grissom one of the top collegiate volleyball venues in all the nation. A key to that is bringing record crowds to The Griss and in 2016, fans have shown up in a big way. Eight of the Top 20 crowds in Griss history have come in the McFatrich era, with four this year, including 1,409 against Kansas in the season opener, the third most in school history.
Moving Up The SEC Wins Chart…
A victory on Wednesday would also move MSU to 5 SEC wins on the season, which would tie for the sixth-most conference wins in school history and put State one short of its 2015 total.
Winning The Attacking Battle Is Crucial ...
The hitting percentage battle is a major key for the Bulldogs. MSU is undefeated this year when out-hitting its opponent and is 1-17 when losing that battle. MSU took down Tennessee in its SEC opener for its first win when hitting worse, hitting .204 to the Volunteers' .278.
The First Set Is The Key ...
One early trend discovered with the 2016 Bulldogs lies within the first set. State is 10-5 when capturing the first set, but when 2-12 when unable to do so. Winning the first two sets almost assures the Bulldogs of victory, as they are 8-2 this year when doing so.
State Bringing Blocking Back In Style ...
MSU has excelled in a number of statistical categories this season, but none have been better than the Bulldogs' blocking game. State has tallied 10 double-digit block performances this season so far and have earned 229.5 total, which is fifth in the SEC.
Singleton Closing In On School Record…
Senior Evie Grace Singleton's 16 kills on Sunday pushed her up into a tie for second place on the MSU single-season kills list. She has 447 on the year, which ties Jennifer Shupe's 1996 campaign. She is now just 66 kills away from tying Christine Owen's school record of 513 kills in 1997.
Johnson's Blocking Prowess Lands Her On MSU Top 10 List…
Leading the way for MSU's impressive blocking game is senior Jazmyne Johnson, who has totaled 119 total blocks. Johnson is the first Bulldog since Lainey Wyman in 2011 to reach the 100 mark in a season, while her 119 total denials are the most since Ashley Newsome recorded 137 in 2010.
Johnson's blocking prowess has also landed her in the MSU single-season Top 10 list, as she is tied with Ashley Newsome's 2009 season for seventh place.
Other Bulldogs In The Record Books…
Payton Harris remains at third on the MSU career digs list with 1,498. She made the move into third place, passing Kayla Woodard (2007-10) after tallying 17 digs at Arkansas. She stands 66 away from tying Megan Lukasek (2004-07) for second place and 238 away from tying Melissa Kariker (1993-96) for first.
Riley Duzenack is the other rookie making moves up the MSU freshman charts. She currently has 421 assists, standing firm at sixth on the MSU freshman assists list.
