Cross Country enters ranked No. 2 in the South Region
Cross Country Eyes Second-Straight NCAA Championships Appearance
November 10, 2016 | Cross Country
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As the calendar turns to November and the leaves finally begin to change, the Mississippi State cross country teams are in the sunshine state chasing championships.
Fresh from their third-straight Top 5 performance at SEC Championships, the MSU women are eying a berth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the second-consecutive season. During last year's historic run, the MSU women placed second at the South Regional Championships and rode that momentum all the way to a program-best 17th place finish at Nationals.
The Bulldogs are the second-highest ranked team in the region according to the USTFCCCA, behind only conference foe No. 14 Ole Miss. The 32-team field also consists of SEC rivals Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.
"We are very excited for the opportunity in front of us," MSU coach Houston Franks said. "Obviously, last year's performance here was monumental for our program, but we are not satisfied. Our goal every year is to improve from last season."
After making it to Nationals as an individual in 2014 and with her teammates in 2015, senior All-American Rhianwedd Price looks to make a third-straight trip to cap her stellar MSU cross country career. While sophomore Shannon Fair will attempt to guide MSU to their first South Regional Championship after pacing MSU at SEC Championships two weeks ago.
Hosted by Florida State, the NCAA South Region Championships will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT at Apalachee Regional Park, with the women's 6000-meter championship race. The MSU men are also in Tallahassee for the championships, and will run in the 10,000-meter race beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT against a 24-team field.
