MSU Finishes Second at Mountaineer Intercollegiate
October 11, 2016 | Men's Golf
BRIDGEPORT, W.V. – Adding to its best start since 2012-13, the Mississippi State men's golf team finished second at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate, its highest finish since winning the Old Waverly Colligiate Championship in 2014.
MSU shot 574 over the final 36 holes to solidify its third Top 5 finish of the season.
"I'm really proud of the way our team played this week," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "We were in contention to win coming down the stretch and just came up a little short."
Leading the Bulldog charge, Ross Bell recorded his best-career finish at 215 to place tied for fifth. On the final two rounds, he fired a 3-under-par.
Garrett Johnson tied his career-low round with a 70 in the second and then followed that up with a final round 75 to tie for 17th place.
Taylor Grant matched Johnson's 70 with one of his own in the second round before shooting a 77 in the final 18 to join his teammate in a tie for 17th.
Senior Jackson Dick made it four Bulldogs in the Top 25 by shooting a second round 75 before shaving four shots off his total for a final round 71. He finished tied for 25th.
Rounding out the MSU lineup, Taylor Bibbs shot a second round 70 to give every Bulldog at least one round at under par in the tournament. Bibbs shot a final round of 78 to tie the junior for 33rd place.
"This is a position we intend to be in more often, and we can learn from today's experience," Homan said.
Arkansas won the team title by 11 shots against MSU, while Patrick Flavin of Miami (OH) won the individual.
The Bulldogs are off a week before heading to Florida to play in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 24th.
