STARKVILLE, Miss. – A historic season for Mississippi State volleyball presses on as the Bulldogs continue SEC play by hitting the road for the next three matches. With State getting ready for a week at Alabama and Auburn, it's time to take a look back at last weekend and the 2016 season as a whole with this week's Bulldog Volleyball Notebook.
Weekend Recap…
MSU hosted No. 25 Kentucky last weekend and fell in a tight three-set battle. Despite being swept, the Dogs pushed UK to the limit in all three sets, including holding the lead late in the third.

The Dogs kick off a three-match road trip with a journey through the state of Alabama, starting with the Crimson Tide on Wednesday. MSU and UA will face off on ESPNU on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. CT. State will then travel to Auburn for a Sunday, Oct. 16 battle at 12 p.m., on the SEC Network.

Winning The Attacking Battle Is Crucial…
To say coming out on top in the hitting percentage battle is key for the Bulldogs may be an understatement. MSU is undefeated this year when out-hitting its opponent and is 1-8 when losing the attacking battle. MSU took down Tennessee in its SEC opener for its first win when losing the attacking battle, hitting .204 to the Volunteers' .278.
The First Set Is The Key…
One early trend discovered with the 2016 Bulldogs lies within the first set. State is 9-2 when capturing the first set, but when 2-6 when unable to do so. Winning the first two sets almost assures the Bulldogs of victory, as they are 7-1 this year when doing so.
Leading On The Stat Sheet Is Critical…
When the Dogs lead on the stat sheet, it has almost always signaled a victory for the Maroon and White. In fact, 10 of State's wins have come when leading in kills, assists and hitting percentage.

State Bringing Blocking Back In Style…
MSU has excelled in a number of statistical categories this season, but none have been better than the Bulldogs' blocking game. State has tallied eight double-digit block performances this season so far and have earned 171.5 total through the first 19 matches of play, the best since 1997. The team leads the SEC and stands 41st in the nation in total blocks.
Leading the way is senior Jazmyne Johnson, who has 90 total blocks. That is the most blocks by a Bulldog in the first 19 matches of the season in school history.
MSU's Big Three…
A growing trend for MSU in recent weeks has been the presence of an offensive big three of Evie Grace Singleton, Emily Hill and Jelena Vujcin. Against the Wildcats, the trio all recorded double-digit kills, marking the sixth-straight contest of accomplishing the feat. The three lead MSU on the year in kills, with Singleton topping the team with 293 and Hill (225) and Vujcin (183) following close behind.
Record Watch: Blossom Sato…
In only her second season in college, sophomore Blossom Sato has already cracked the MSU Top 10 for career assists. After tallying 29 assists against No. 25 Kentucky, Sato now has 1,404 career assists and stands 10th on the list. She is just 124 assists away from tying for ninth place.
Record Watch: Payton Harris…
Junior Payton Harris now stands at 1,396 digs for her career and continues to make strides up the MSU record book. She currently holds fourth place on the school's career digs list and is 37 short of tying for third place. Melissa Kariker (1993-96) holds the school record with 1,707.
