STARKVILLE, Miss. - Combining for nine strikeouts and one walk, the true freshmen duo of left-hander Ethan Small and right-hander Noah Hughes led Maroon to a 5-1 victory against Gray in Mississippi State baseball's fifth intrasquad scrimmage of the fall. The seven-inning exhibition Tuesday afternoon took place at Dudy Noble Field.
Small started for Maroon, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts and zero walks. The Lexington, Tennessee, native was relieved by Hughes, who allowed no runs over three innings with four strikeouts, one walk and two hits allowed.
Maroon jumped on the scoreboard first with a two-out single up the middle by junior Nathaniel Lowe in the top of the first.
Following an RBI single by Gray's Luke Reynolds in the bottom half of the first to tie it at 1-1, Maroon took the lead for good in the third when freshman Brant Blaylock scored on a sacrifice fly courtesy of Jake Mangum.
Leading 2-1, Maroon added three unearned runs in the fourth, inlcuding an RBI single from Mangum.
Lowe led the victors in hitting, going 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and a walk. For Gray, Reynolds was the only player with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
