Ramey Fires Career-Best 65, Two Strokes Off Lead
September 13, 2011 | Men's Golf
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Wasting no time to make noise in the 2011-12 season, sophomore Bulldog Chad Ramey fired a career-best, 6-under-par 65 during the second round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate on Monday.
Ramey's two-round, 7-under-par 135 propelled the Mississippi State men's golf team to a 3-over-par 571 and a tie for sixth with one round remaining on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs opened with a 287 in the first round Monday morning before climbing the leaderboard with a second-round 284 in the afternoon. Ole Miss is currently atop the field after notching a 10-under-par 558 on the day.
Ramey's tally is the best round by an MSU athlete since Noah Goldman's 64 in the 2008 Roadrunner Intercollegiate. He currently trails tournament-leader Blake Kelley of South Alabama by two strokes entering the final round.
"I hit the ball really well today," Ramey said. "I had a few putts roll my way and was able to get them to fall. My goal was to stay away from trouble out there, and I feel like I accomplished that."
Senior Alex Rowland also had a couple of solid rounds, carding a 72 and 73, respectively.
Other Maroon and White scores include Lee Heaton's and Tyler Smith's 4-over-par 146's and Axel Boasson's 154.
"Chad (Ramey) played exceptional," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "He was in total control of his game today and could have even been a few shots better. We counted a lot of 73's, which is nothing special as easy as the course was playing today. We have the opportunity to post more rounds under par tomorrow if we get a few more putts to fall."
Live stats for the second round will be available through www.mstateathletics.com beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Fans can follow Mississippi State Golf on Twitter at www.twitter.com/mstateMG and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mstateWG.
