Boasson Leads Bulldogs To 5-Under-Par 279 In Final Round
September 13, 2011 | Men's Golf
MSU bettered its team score each day and managed a 2-under-par 850 for the two-day, three-round event. Using the 5-under-par 279, the Bulldogs maintained sixth place. UAB claimed the tournament title with a 16-under-par 836.
Boasson's 15-stroke improvement included a round-high seven birdies. He turned in a team-best 14 birdies to raise the Bulldogs' event-total to 53.
"I was more relaxed and had better focus today," Boasson said. "I was in control of my ball today, but the key to my score was putting. I was making a lot more putts, especially some good up and down putts."
Sophomore Chad Ramey backed up his second-round 65 with a 1-over-par 72 to finish tied for sixth overall. Blake Kelly of South Alabama used a final-round, 1-under-par 70 to win the event with a 10-under-par 203.
Senior Alex Rowland capped off his tournament notching a 2-under-par 69 in the final round to finish 1-over, while fellow senior Lee Heaton tallied 11 birdies en route to a 4-over-par 217.
Seeing his first collegiate action, redshirt freshman Tyler Smith claimed back-to-back 73's before turning in a 77 in the final round.
"We improved each round," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "Shooting the second lowest round of the day at 279 was a definitely positive. I was proud of the way Axel rebounded from his 82 to shoot a 67. Chad had his chances to make a move up the leaderboard but just couldn't get many putts to drop."
