August 28, 2010 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's Volleyball Bulldogs knocked off both Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Montana Saturday to remain unbeaten on the young season and capture the 2010 Maroon Classic held this weekend at the Newell-Grissom Building.
Mississippi State posted a 3-1 win over the TAMU-Corpus Christi Islanders (19-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-19) Saturday afternoon and then closed out the season-opening weekend tournament with a straight-sets win (30-28, 25-18, 25-23) win over Montana.
“I'm proud of the way our team competed this weekend,” said second-year Bulldog volleyball coach Jenny Hazelwood. “We got off to a slow start but came on strong against Corpus Christi and after losing a starter (outside hitter Faith Steinwedell) early in the final match against Montana, we came together as a team and got the win in three sets.”
With MSU football coach and guest volleyball bench coach Dan Mullen looking on during pre-match ceremonies, Hazelwood was honored prior to Saturday night's game for registering her 100th career coaching win. MSU Athletics Director Scott Stricklin made the presentation just hours after her milestone Saturday afternoon win over TAMU-CC.
Faith Steinwedell, a junior from La Jolla, Calif., sustained a knee injury in the opening set of the tourney finale. Further medical evaluation will determine the extent of the injury and how long she will be sidelined.
Senior Ashley Newsome was named tournament MVP and was joined on the Maroon Classic All-Tournament Team by junior Caitlin Rance. Newsome tallied 47 kills with a team-best .290 attack percent and a team-leading 11 total blocks on the weekend. Rance had 57 kills and 32 digs on the weekend.
State dropped its first set of the young season to open Saturday's match with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islands. But the Bulldogs thundered back in impressive fashion to take the next three sets.
In their first-ever meeting with the Islanders, State (3-0) prevailed 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-19), giving MSU head coach her 100th career coaching win. MSU needs a win against Montana in Saturday night's tourney finale to clinch the Classic championship.
Junior Caitlin Rance led a trio of Bulldogs with double-figure kills totals as State amassed a 56-36 lead in kills. Rance registered a season-best 16 while Faith Steinwedell added 15 and Ashley Newsome 12.
MSU had nine attack errors in dropping in the 25-19 opening set loss. But Steinwedell and Rance tallied six kills each to fuel the Bulldog comeback in the second stanza. State sizzled on offense in the third set, hitting at a .500 clip with just one attack error in registering a lop-sided 25-10 win.
State nailed down the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, racing to an 11-1 lead and then fending off a remarkable 9-0 run by the Islanders.
Senior libero Kayla Woodard piled up 19 digs while Steinwedell backed her 15-kill performance with 17 digs for her fourth career double-double. Steinwedell also matched a career best with four service aces.
In Saturday's nightcap, Rance led all scorers with 17 kills and Newsome followed with 12 as State bested Montana to claim the tournament title. Rance registered eight kills in 11 errorless attempts in the second set when the Bulldogs hit at a .552 clip. State did not trail in the match-clinching third set but had to pull away from a 22-22 deadlock to wrap up the hard-fought win.
Paige Branstiter had 15 kills while Kayla Reno added 10 more for UM.
State senior Kayla Woodard inched closer to the 1,000-dig career mark, tallying 19 digs Saturday night and 64 for the weekend to raise her four-year career total to 990. She stands to become the 12th MSU player to reach the 1,000-dig milestone in a career. Junior Kellye Jordan, who came off the bench to replace Steinwedell, registered a pair of kills and a career-high 13 digs. Freshman setter Paris Perret secured her first career double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs. Perret had 130 assists in four matches, helping direct a Bulldog offense that hit at a .267 rate for the weekend.
The Bulldogs hit the road for their next eight matches, competing in the coming weekend against Louisiana Tech, UT-Pan American and tournament host UT-Arlington in the Maverick Invitational Sept. 3-4 in Arlington, Texas.
