Bulldog Tennis Blanks Memphis, 7-0, For Fourth-Straight Win

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's 54th-ranked men's tennis team (6-3) proved too much for the Memphis Tigers (3-5) Friday afternoon in a 7-0 win at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
"This was our last match before SEC play, so we wanted to come out here and play strong," said Mississippi State head coach Per Nilsson. "I thought we did just that and accomplished what we wanted to do."
The Bulldogs started the match strong in doubles, taking the point with wins at courts No. 2 and No. 3. MSU's duo of Antonio Lastre and Daniel Sanchez took an 8-3 victory over UM's pair of Michcael Hayes and John Taylor at the second position, while their Bulldog teammates Chris Doerr and Tanner Stump were equally as dominant in an 8-3 win over the Tiger tandem of Spencer Heflin and Charlie Ramsey. The lone Bulldog team to go down was the pair of George Coupland and Max Gregor Smith, who took an 8-5 defeat to the Tiger duo of David Henry and Jordan Smith at the top position.
Up 1-0, the Bulldogs turned to the singles courts needing three victories to take the match. MSU came out strong from the start, taking straight-set wins at every position.
Sanchez was the first Bulldog to take a victory, as he ousted Taylor 6-3, 6-2, extending his personal winning streak to five matches. His victory was then followed by Coupland's 6-3, 6-3 triumph over UM's Henry at the second position, while teammate Doerr clinched the match and won his first dual-match contest of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tiger Michael Gaerthoefner at court No. 6.
From there, MSU continued its dominating performance with wins at the three remaining courts. Smith ousted Hayes at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Bulldog Artem Ilyushin defeated Ramsey 6-2, 6-0 at the top court, while State's Lastre took a 6-1, 6-4 victory over UM's Hayes at the third position.
Mississippi State returns to the courts next Friday, March 5 in a road-contest with Kentucky. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. CT, and is State's first conference match of the season.
