MSU Track and Field Shines at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Al Schmidt called it an “absolutely great weekend” for his track and field squad.
It wasn't just talk, either, as he had the stats to back up his statement.
Saturday at the Indiana Indoor Relays in Bloomington, his Mississippi State squad captured four medalist titles, while his women's 4x400 meter relay squad set a school record. Coupled with the men's 4x400-meter relay title at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York City on Friday, Schmidt couldn't have asked for a better weekend.
“Great weekend,” he said. “This shows we can compete at the highest level with great success.”
That high level of success started with Keisha Wallace winning the long jump with a leap of 18-01.50.
Talk about setting a tone.
Following her win, Josh Tucker claimed top honors in the men's high jump at 6-8.75, while Crystal Wilson blew past the highly-competitive field in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 24.78. And while she didn't win the 400-meter run, she did finish second at 55.72.
Then it was Brittany Covington's turn to shine on the big stage, as she won the 600-meter dash with an impressive run of 1:36.67.
And then to cap the night off, the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Jody-Ann Muir, Taneisha Baker, Covington and Wilson finished second with a school-record time of 3:43.59
“Our ladies continue to take the next step toward establishing themselves as an elite group,” assistant coach Bryan Fetzer said. “What they did this weekend was huge in building our program into a national contender.”
Sophomore Deangelo Cherry also took more steps to greatness.
In the 60-meter run, he won the preliminary and semi-final rounds but did not compete in the finals. His prelim time of 6.65, however, was one of the best in the nation this year. He also finished second in the 200-meter dash at 21.75.
“I've said all along he has a bright future,” Schmidt said. “He's got a chance to be the best by knocking off the best.”
Other notable MSU performers at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse were Tevarus Christian's third-pace finish in the long jump (22-07.25), Wendy Copeland placing third in the triple jump (38-04.75), Wallace finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles, Polk finishing sixth in the 200-meter dash (25.28), Justin Christian coming in fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.36), Crystal Wilson finishing second in the 400-meter dash (55.80), Daniel Simpkins placing third in the 3,000-meter run (8:28.50) and Simone Domingue finishing fifth in the 5000-meter run (18:06.68).
