Mayers Earns Regional Qualifying Marks On Day Three Of Alabama Relays
March 28, 2009 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? Junior Emanuel Mayers ran 52.18 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles to capture second place and regional qualifying marks, on the Bulldogs' third day in Tuscaloosa.
“The big race of the day was Emanuel's 400 hurdle race,” head coach Al Schmidt said. “This was only his second time over the hurdles this season and to regionally qualify is a big thing.”
Freshman Chelsea Rae Smyth led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with a third place finish in the 800-meter run. Smyth finished in 2 minutes 15 seconds setting the pace for the Maroon and White.
“Chelsea had a good competitive race,” Schmidt said. “I am very happy with the way she raced and the improvements she made today.”
In the 400-meter dash, Crystal Wilson ran 55.73 seconds to finish in 4th place. Wilson's time also ranks her 4th best in MSU history.
In the field events, long jumpers Wendy Copeland and Priscilla Gaines continued to shine. Copeland jumped 19 feet 4.25 inches to finish third, while Gaines jumped 19-03.50 to finish fourth. For the men's team, Matthew Newman also shined in the pole vault with a second place finish. The freshman cleared 14-07.25 in the event.
“I think we did a lot of good things today,” Schmidt said. “Each weekend our goal is to have regional qualifying performances and so far we have four with a big day tomorrow. I'm really proud of our team.”
The final day of competition begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. with the men's hammer throw, followed by the first running event at 12:30 p.m.
