STARKVILLE, Miss. - Vanderbilt freshman right-hander Caleb Cotham threw seven innings of shutout baseball as the Commodores defeated Mississippi State 16-0 in Southeastern Conference play Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
The 13th-ranked Commodores shut out MSU for only the third time ever. The margin of victory was the second largest in series history, trailing only Vanderbilt's 20-0 victory in 1923 in Nashville.
With the victory, the Commodores clinched the weekend series. Vanderbilt won Friday night's series opener, 15-8. Vanderbilt improves to 23-10 overall and 7-6 in conferfence play, while MSU falls to 14-20 and 3-11.
The Commodores struck quickly Saturday, scoring once in the second inning and running the lead to 4-0 an inning later on a three-run home run by Pedro Alvarez. The guests later removed all doubt by scoring four times in the fifth inning, cruising to the easy victory from there.
Alvarez continued his phenominal offensive weekend for the Commodores. The Vanderbilt third baseman finished with four hits and four RBI on Saturday. For the series, Alvarez is now 7-for-11 with a pair of extra base hits and four RBI.
Vanderbilt finished with 15 hits. Behind Alvarez, the Commodores also received multiple hits from David Macias, Alex Feinberg, Ryan Flaherty, Andrew Giobbi and Brian Harris. Flaherty and Dominic de la Osa each drove in three runs for the Commodores. A triple by Jonathan White and the Alvarez home run were the only extra-base hits by either team.
MSU, which was officially charged with four errors in the contest, managed seven total hits. The Bulldogs had a single apiece from Grant Hogue, Ryan Collins, Jeff Flagg, Jet Butler, Russ Sneed, Ryan Duffy and Andy Rice.
Cotham (5-2) worked the first seven innings for the Commodores. He allowed five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Taylor Hill and Brett Jacobson comined for two innings of two-hit relief pitching to complete the shutout.
MSU starter Ricky Bowen (2-4) took the loss. Bowen worked 4-1/3 innings, allowing five hits and eight runs (six earned), with five walks and a pair of strikeouts. Jesse Carver (1-2/3 innings) and Greg Houston (3 innings) completed the contest on the mound for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and Commodores close out their weekend series with a 1:30 p.m. start Sunday. MSU is scheduled to start senior right-hander John Lalor (1-2, 3.63 ERA), while Vanderbilt is scheduled to counter with junior right-hander Nick Christiani (3-1, 3.78).
MSU then travels to Pearl to take on in-state rival Mississippi in the Governor's Cup. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Trustmark Park. The MSU-UM non-conference clash will be televised regionally by Comcast Sports Southeast.
