
Travis McKay Finishes Fourth In Steeplechase At SEC Championships

McKay clocked a time of eight minutes, 53.87 seconds in the distance event which ranks third-best all-time on the MSU 3000m steeplechase list. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada-native finished strong during the final stretch to earn the Bulldogs five points in the overall team standings. McKay will compete on Sunday in the 5000-meter run which is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. CST on Sunday.
MSU junior Golden Coachman advanced to the finals of his second event of the weekend with a time of 3:51.02 in the men's 1500-meter run. The junior from Birmingham, Ala. qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run on Friday. Coachman will join Nathan Daniels as the State representatives in the finals of the two-lap event. MState's last SEC Champion in the 800-meter event was Kraig Cesar in 1989.
On the women's side, senior Jen McPherson moved on to the finals of the women's 1500-meter run with a preliminary mark of 4:28.52. On Sunday, the Nampa, Idaho-native will contend for two SEC Titles with the 1500-meter run and the 800-meter run. It marks the second-straight year that McPherson has competed in the both events at the SEC meet.
The Maroon and White's final points of the day came by way of the men's high jump. Sophomore Allen Cassell tied a career-best mark in the event with a clearance of 6-08 ¾ . Nicola Wilson earned the Lady Bulldogs two points in the shot put with a seventh-place finish.
After three days of competition, the Bulldogs are currently tenth with 13 points while the State women stand eighth with 12 points. The team leaders heading into the final day is Tennessee on the men's side and Georgia on the women's ledger.
Championship day of the 2007 SEC Track and Field Championships will get underway at 1 p.m. CST with the women's discus finals.
