May 05, 2026 | Baseball
STARKVILLE - No. 11 Mississippi State did not waste much time turning an early deficit into another lopsided night at Dudy Noble Field.
Ace Reese homered twice and drove in six runs, Reed Stallman added two homers and five RBIs as MSU overwhelmed Nicholls 21-6 in seven innings Tuesday night.
The Diamond Dawgs (37-12) trailed 2-0 after Caston Thompson's two-run homer in the top of the first, but MSU answered with a 12-run bottom half and never slowed down. State finished with 18 hits, six home runs and seven walks while ending the game early by the 10-run rule.
Reese went 4-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and six RBIs to lead Mississippi State's attack. Stallman was also 4-for-5 with two homers, a double, four runs scored and five RBIs. Jacob Parker added a three-hit night, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs.
The Bulldogs sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 12 runs on six hits and seven walks. Blake Bevis started the scoring with an RBI double, Parker followed with an RBI single and Stallman put State ahead for good with a two-run double.
Gehrig Frei, Reese and Noah Sullivan each added run-scoring plate appearances before Parker delivered the biggest swing of the inning, launching a grand slam to right-center field to stretch Mississippi State's lead to 12-2.
MSU kept piling on from there. Stallman and Drew Wyers hit back-to-back solo homers in the second to make it 14-2, and Stallman added a two-run shot in the third. Reese homered in the fourth, then struck again in the fifth with a three-run blast that pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 21-6.
Nicholls (25-23) scored twice in the first, three times in the fourth and once in the fifth. Thompson had a two-run homer, while Keegan Giger went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI. Carter Jenkins also had two hits and scored twice.
Chris Billingsley Jr. started for Mississippi State and allowed five runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. Jack Gleason (4-1) earned the win in relief, giving up one run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings while striking out two. Parker Rhodes closed it out with two scoreless innings, striking out five.
Nicholls starter Austin Vargas (0-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on three hits and four walks in two-thirds of an inning. The Colonels used six pitchers, and five of them allowed at least two runs.
Mississippi State will wrap up its regular season home slate against sixth-ranked Auburn. The Bulldogs and Tigers open the three-game series on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
