Bulldogs Open Conference Play With Victory Over Auburn

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball ended up on the right side of a defensive battle on opening night of Southeastern Conference play, as they moved to 14-1 on the season with a 75-53 victory over the Auburn Tigers.
Mississippi State held Auburn to their second lowest point total. Auburn's season low was in a 51-point performance in a victory over Rutgers. This was the least they have scored in a loss this year. In the first quarter, Auburn put up only seven points, the least of a Missisisppi State opponent in the first ten minutes of a game this year. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Tigers 46-24. Auburn's 24 rebounds were the second-least from a Mississippi State opponent this year.
Trayanna Crisp scored a season-high 17 points in her SEC game. The senior from Goodyear, Arizona, went into the locker room at halftime with four points. In the second half, she collected 13 points, including three triples. Throughout the entire game, Crisp shot 60 percent from the floor and went 3-7 from distance, while tying for the team lead of three assists.
Destiney McPhaul finished in double figures for the ninth time this season and 23rd time in her career with 12 points. McPhaul knocked down six shots in the contest, tying Crisp for the most on the team. She hit a pair of triples and let the Bulldogs in the first half with 10.
Madison Francis picked up a double-double for the fourth time this season. The freshman from Lancaster, New York, collected 12 points and 13 rebounds, tying her season-high in rebounds. Francis led the Bulldogs in rebounding for the fifth time this year.
Favour Nwaedozi battled foul trouble in the first half and some of the third quarter, but still finished with double digit rebounds for the third consecutive game and for the ninth time this year. Nwaedozi earned nine points and 13 rebounds.
The Bulldogs will hit the road for Norman this weekend to take on the eighth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
