STARKVILLE – Mississippi State was unable to hold on to a fourth-quarter lead and ultimately fell by a 45-38 decision in overtime to No. 22 Texas in a heartbreaker on Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium.
MSU led 31-14 entering the final period before the Longhorns rallied to force overtime. Texas then scored on its first possession of the extra period and the Bulldogs didn't answer.
Texas took the lead early in the game by forcing a punt and scoring quickly to gain a 7-0 advantage before State responded. MSU quarterback Blake Shapen hit tight end Sam West over the middle for a 13-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:14 left in the first quarter.
In the second, Texas regained a 14-7 lead with a touchdown before State responded once again. The Bulldogs put together an 83-yard drive capped off by a touchdown pass at the goal line from quarterback Kamario Taylor to tight end Seydou Traore, who hauled in the ball off a deflection to tie the game once again, 14-14, at the 9:21 mark.
Cornerback Kelley Jones came up with an interception later in the quarter, setting up State to take the lead with a 23-yard field goal from kicker Kyle Ferrie.
Then, MSU forced a punt and marched down the field with under two minutes left in the half and capitalized with a 23-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brenen Thompson from Shapen to extend State's lead to 24-14 heading into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Shapen connected with Thompson again on third-and-goal to extend State's lead to 17 going into the fourth.
Texas began the final frame and found the end zone to bring the score back to 31-21 before MSU answered again with a Shapen shovel pass to running back Davon Booth. Booth turned and ran 62 yards for the score to put the Bulldogs back up 38-21 with 12:29 to play in regulation.
From there, Texas clawed back from a 17-point deficit to tie the game at the 1:47 mark on a punt returned for a touchdown, ultimately forcing the decisive overtime period.
Shapen turned in 381 passing yards and four touchdowns for the contest to lead State's air attack. Running back Davon Booth led the Bulldog ground game with 99 yards.
