Bulldogs Set to Begin Season at Carmel Cup
August 29, 2024 | Women's Golf
Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, the Mississippi State women's golf squad is set to begin their 2024-25 campaign at the Carmel Cup on Friday.
Â
The Bulldogs will be starting their season at Pebble Beach for the third straight year. Including State, six participating teams taking the course are coming off NCAA Tournament appearances. These include Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. All six besides Oklahoma reached the finals in Carlsbad last season. Rounding out the loaded field will be TCU and Texas Tech.
Â
This year's Bulldog squad will be familiar for fans, as every golfer on roster are all returners from last season. Unique to the Carmel Cup, teams will field an additional six golfer, with the top five scores contributing to the team total.
Â
The 2023 and 2024 SEC Individual Champion Julia Lopez Ramirez leads off the lineup for her fourth year in the Maroon and White. Lopez Ramirez became just the fourth golfer in conference history to pick up back-to-back individual titles and the first since 2019. She enters the collegiate season after participating at the AIG Women's Open, where she earned the second-best finish for an amateur in the event.
Â
Avery Weed returns for her sophomore season with the Bulldogs. Weed had a standout '23-24 season, as she finished the season with an average of 72.65, the third lowest average for any freshman in program history. Last season, she set her career-best finish when she was runner-up in the Nexus Collegiate Invitational after securing a score of 1-under.
Â
Izzy Pellot will shoot out of the third spot for State. Pellot, a junior from Orlando, Florida, was crucial in igniting the Bulldogs to a postseason run last year. In the match play portion of the SEC Tournament, Pellot was a perfect 3-0 to help lead the team to the first conference championship in program history.
Â
Teeing off in the fourth spot is Surapa Janthamunee. Like Pellot, SJ picked up her play to help guide State through the post season. In the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional, SJ tied her career best score, which she set earlier that season in the Bulldog's home event, The Ally. The junior finished 5-under in both tournaments, as she was runner-up in The Ally and finished tied for 10th in the regional.
Â
Samantha Whateley will make her second appearance in the Carmel Cup in her sophomore season. Whateley played in 16 rounds throughout last season, earning her best finish in the ULM Invitational. She finished tied for 13th after shooting 4-under in the final round. With that round, Whateley and Weed became the second freshman duo in as many years to record a round in the 60s.
Â
Chiara Horder will round out the State lineup at Pebble Beach. The senior will be making her third appearance at the Carmel Cup and her second as a Bulldog. Her best finish last season took place at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, as she helped State finish second after finishing 2-under par and 8th individually.
Â
The Dawgs are set to begin teeing off at 8:40 a.m. CT on Friday. Live scoring for the Carmel Cup will be available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
