HOUSTON – Mississippi State is sending four women's tennis players to the Lone Star State for the Rice Fall Invitational, a three-day tournament beginning on Friday.
Senior Alessia Tagliente, sophomore Jayna Clemens as well as freshmen Emma Cohen and Gianna Oboniye will represent the Bulldogs this weekend as they compete against players from Baylor, Houston, Iowa State, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UT Arlington, UTRGV and UTSA.
"As we finish our fall with this event, I want to continue to add on to the positive habits that we are creating on a daily basis," said head coach Chris Hooshyar. "It's another opportunity to compete and fight against good quality opponents."
Play begins on Friday with two rounds of doubles starting at 9 a.m. and one round of singles that gets underway at noon.
After pairing up for the first time at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic last weekend, Clemens and Oboniye will pair up once more to face Ioana Dumitrescu and Nika Novikova of UT Arlington in the opening round of doubles action. Depending on their result, they'll face either Rice's Saara Orav and Nithesa Selvaraj or LSU's Kenna Erickson and Indi Patel at 10 a.m.
Tagliente and Cohen join forces for the first time to take on Rice's Valentina Ponce Serrano and Anushka Ashar at 9 a.m. and later take on Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Maria Araoz-Gosn of UT Arlington at 10 a.m.
The opening round of singles for the Bulldogs begins at 1:30 p.m. as Oboniye squares off against Oklahoma's Salakthip Ounmang. At the same time, Tagliente will be taking on Ivanovskaia while Clemens faces Novikova and Cohen battles LSU's Carina Holguin.
