The Final Horn: State 95, West Georgia 60
November 04, 2024 | Men's Basketball, Joel Coleman
A quick rundown of MSU’s win over the Wolves.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Mississippi State entered this basketball season with much anticipation and the Bulldogs' season opener only served to further amplify that excitement. MSU rolled to a 95-60 victory over West Georgia, never trailing in the contest. Josh Hubbard scored eight points in the first six minutes to help State build an early 24-9 advantage, and after West Georgia clawed its way back to within three points, Claudell Harris Jr. closed the first half with a flurry of 3-pointers – three of them in the final 1:29 before the intermission – to give the Dawgs a commanding 40-29 lead at the break. State then simply kept the foot on the gas in the second half, leading by as many as 40 points, before wrapping game one in Maroon and White.
KEY NUMBERS: It's easy to look at the point totals of Hubbard and Harris as the evening's most crucial figures with the two scoring 26 and 20 respectively. But on the individual side of things, also remember the efforts of KeShawn Murphy who, as he's done throughout his Bulldog career, flashed his tremendous versatility with six points, seven rebounds and four assists. It also bears noting how strong State was from beyond the arc. Led by the efforts of Hubbard and Harris, State shot 46.7 percent (14 of 30) from three-point range. On the flip side, the MSU defense made life incredibly difficult for the Wolves from deep, and as a whole. West Georgia made only four of its 19 three-point attempts (21.1 percent) and shot just 38.9 percent overall.
