Postgame Notes: State vs. West Georgia

TEAM NOTES
- Mississippi State began its 2024-25 campaign with a 95-60 rout over West Georgia at Humphrey Coliseum.
- The 95 points are the second-highest point total scored by the Bulldogs under Coach Jans.
- The Bulldogs have won 11 of their last 12 season openers since 2013-14 highlighted by all three debuts under Coach Jans. The three wins for the Maroon and White with Coach Jans at the helm have come by an average of 23.0 points per game.
- Coach Jans moved to 9-0 in his season openers as a NCAA Division I head coach. Eight of the nine victories have come by double digits.
- The Bulldogs utilized a balanced offensive attack with eight players scoring at least five points and produced a 46-30 advantage in bench points.
- State has dialed up wins in 24 of 28 games versus non-SEC opponents and have held 19 of those teams to 60 points or less.
- The Bulldogs improved to 14-1 during the month of November under Coach Jans.
- State had six players secure multiple steals and racked up 17 steals as a team.
- The 17 steals are the most ever by a Coach Jans squad. They also are the most steals for a State team since the Bulldogs secured 17 steals against Oregon State on 12/01/2016.
- The Maroon and White converted 20 turnovers into 31 of the game's 41 points off miscues.
- State hit on 22 of its 36 field goals on the interior and claimed a 44-28 advantage in paint points.
- The Bulldogs were efficient in transition and amassed a 26-4 edge in fast break points.
- State improved to 35-5 when leading at halftime under Coach Jans.
- As a team, State connected on 36-of-65 from the field (55.4 percent), drained 14-of-30 from three-point territory (46.7 percent) and converted on 9-of-16 at the foul line (56.3 percent).
- The 14 treys were most by State under Coach Jans. The last time the Bulldogs sank at least 14 triples was when State buried 16 three-pointers versus Texas A&M on 03/09/2019.
- Claudell Harris Jr. and Josh Hubbard each made six three-pointers. It marked the first time in program history that State had two players make at least six treys during the same game.
- Conversely, West Georgia turned in a 21-for-54 shooting effort (38.9 percent), hit 4-for-19 of its three-pointers (21.1 percent) and produced a 14-for-20 clip from the free throw line (70.0 percent).
- State improves to 26-5 under Coach Jans when holding its opponent to under a 40 percent shooting clip.
PLAYER NOTES
Josh Hubbard
- Started in his 17th consecutive game over the last two seasons.
- Notched his 14th career performance with 20+ points.
- Finished with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting.
- The 26 points were his second-highest scoring output versus a nonconference opponent.
- Drained multiple three-pointers for the 30th time in 36 career games.
- Buried five or more treys for the 9th time in his career.
- Swiped multiple steals for the 6th time in his career.
- Made his 10th career start and has started in nine of the team's last 14 games going back to the Georgia game.
- Recorded eight points with two steals.
- The eight points matched his non-conference career-best. He also had eight points against Arizona State, UT Martin and Washington State last season. Â
- Dished out two assists for the 12th time in his career.
- Started in his 89th game of his career and has earned the starting nod in 69 of the team's last 70 games over the last three seasons.
- Worked around foul trouble to fill the stats sheet with five points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
- The 2 steals enabled Matthews to surpass Dee Bost (2009-10-11-12) for 4th place in program history.
- Notched multiple steals for the 55th time in his career.
- Made his first career start.
- Opened the season's scoring with a dunk inside the game's first minute.
- Chipped in six points, seven rebounds, a team-high four assists and two blocks.
- The four assists matched a career-high which also was set at Texas A&M on 03/06/2024.
- Registered multiple blocks for the 4th time in his career.
- Started in 21 of his team's 24 games over the last two seasons between Mississippi State and Penn State.
- Managed four points and matched a career-high with three steals.
- Claudell Harris Jr. ripped off 20 points on 7-of-11 from the field fueled by six three-pointers.
- The 20 points for Harris Jr. is the most points recorded by a State player off the bench during the season opener dating back to at least 1988-89.
- Knocked down multiple treys for his 60th time of his career and 5-plus triples for the 7th time of his career.
- Tallied 20+ points for the 18th time of his career.
- Gai Chol came away with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.
- The eight points was his second-highest scoring output of his 17-game career.
- Michael Nwoko and Martavious Russell garnered five points apiece.
- Jeremy Foumena tacked on three points, all at the foul line.
- RJ Melendez and Riley Kugel rounded out the scoring combining for five points, six rebounds and three assists.
- Dellquan Warren made his collegiate debut. He dished out three assists and added three steals for the Maroon and White.
