Bulldogs Fall To No. 12 Tennessee In Four Sets
September 29, 2023 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State volleyball team fell to No. 12 Tennessee in a tightly-contested four set match [22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 17-25] on Friday night.
Down 2-0, the Bulldogs (8-5, 1-2 SEC) battled to a third set victory, but Tennessee (12-1, 3-0 SEC) took the match in set four. The four-set match had 28 tied scores and nine different lead changes.
"Tennessee hasn't had to play anything more than three sets recently," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "For us to respond and come out like that and push that to four sets says a lot about our potential. We had some mid-match switches, in game adjustments, and I thought Emily did a phenomenal job running the offense and following our game plan. Defensively, for us to out block a physical team like Tennessee was an incredible effort, and we also dug a bunch of balls. Overall, we just worked our tails off and I think we were hungry going into the matchup."
Sophie Agee and Karli Schmidt led MSU's offensive attack with an 11-kill performance each. Agee added nine digs and two blocks, while Schmidt tallied three blocks on the night. Right side Amina Shackelford followed with eight kills and five blocks.
The Bulldogs tallied 23 blocks at the net on Friday, led by six from Sanaa Williams, while Rebecca Walk added five blocks. Williams and Walk also registered four kills each on a .400 and .308 hitting mark.
Lauren Myrick paced the backcourt defense with 18 digs, moving her to 907 career digs. Defensive specialist Mary Neal totaled nine digs of her own.
Mississippi State's setters, Alexa Fortin Goede and Emily Oerther, combined for 35 assists and picked up 18 digs. Oerther grabbed her third double-double of the year with 21 assists and a career-high 13 digs.
Mississippi State heads to LSU to take on the Tigers on Sunday. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. CT and will be televised nationally on SEC Network.
