August 31, 2023 | Volleyball
ORLANDO, Fla. – Mississippi State's volleyball program will look to build on an undefeated weekend when the Bulldogs head to Orlando for the UCF Challenge.
On Friday, Sept. 1, State will face UCF at 6 p.m. CT before taking on FIU on Saturday at 4 p.m. The match against UCF will air on ESPN+ and both matches will be available via live stats.
"We are so excited to head to Orlando for our first road trip of the season," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "We are facing two top notch teams this weekend and it will be a great test for us. I am exciting for our Florida girls to get to their home state and play in front of family and friends. Hail state!"
The three Bulldogs returning to their home states are Yuliana Amador (Orlando, Fla.), Amina Shackelford (Buford, Fla.) and Emily Oerther (Windermere, Fla.).
The Bulldogs opened the 2023 campaign at home with the StarkVegas Classic last weekend with a sweep of the tournament. A trip down to Orlando is the first road test for Mississippi State. Â
The match against UCF marks the third matchup between the two teams. The last time State saw the Knights was on Sept. 8, 1989, when MSU earned a 3-2 win. The Bulldogs are 2-1 against FIU, with the Bulldogs taking the last two matches.
SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Myrick is off to a solid start to her 2023 campaign. During last weekend's tournament, Myrick fueled Mississippi State's back row, amassing 5.82 digs per set through three matches.
Alexa Fortin Goede and Oerther were a vital part in the 6-2 offense. Goede captured 57 assists (5.18 per set) and 21 digs (1.91 per set) throughout the weekend, with Oether following behind with 54 assists (4.91 per set) and 14 digs (1.27 per set).
Karli Schmidt led the Bulldogs in kills during all three matches. The senior outside hitter accumulated 42 kills (3.82 per set) during the StarkVegas Classic. Senior middle blocker Rebecca Walk garnered 17 kills and nine blocks for the weekend.
Sophomore Sophie Agee tallied 29 kills and 29 digs, while Shackelford collected 22 kills and led the team with 12 blocks.
