Five Bulldogs Earn College Football Network All-SEC Honors
December 05, 2023 | Football
STARKVILLE – Five Bulldogs were selected to College Football Network All-SEC teams, the publication announced this week. Nathaniel Watson and Jett Johnson were named to the first team, while Percy Lewis, Kam Jones and Jaden Crumedy earned honorable mention honors.
Â
Johnson and Watson had stellar seasons leading the Mississippi State defense. Watson led the SEC in total tackles with 137, while Johnson finished second with 130. The duo is one of just two pairs of teammates at the FBS level to have at least 130 tackles this season, and they are the only Power 5 tandem to achieve that feat.
Â
Johnson and Watson can potentially lead the SEC in total tackles in back-to-back seasons after finishing first and second in 2022. If the duo remains atop the tackle leaderboard, they would become the first pair of SEC teammates to lead the SEC in tackles in back-to-back seasons, and they would be the first pair of Power 5 teammates to do it since 2016-17.
Â
Crumedy earned College Football Network All-SEC Honorable Mention honors after starting all 12 games for the Bulldogs and setting a new career-high in tackles. The graduate student from Hattiesburg recorded a career-best 35 tackles, including a career-high 10 solo stops, to go along with 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two pass breakups. His 2.5 sacks this season were also a career-high. Crumedy closed out his Mississippi State career with 119 tackles and 8.5 sacks.
Â
Jones has been an anchor on the Mississippi State offensive line for the last four seasons, starting all 43 games of his career. In 2023, the Starkville native helped the Bulldogs rush for over 1,700 yards, the most in a single season since 2019. Jones helped pave the way for the first 100-yard rusher at State since 2019 while also helping State have the most rushing yards in a single game, 298 vs. SE Louisiana, since 2019. According to Pro Football Focus, Jones earned a pass-blocking grade of 70.9, the second-best mark of his career. In 614 snaps this season, all at right tackles, Jones allowed just two sacks and committed just five total penalties.
Â
Lewis, a native of Sallis, Miss., made his first start of the season against Western Michigan and proceeded to start every game after. Lewis earned a pass-blocking grade of 73.1 this season, according to PFF. At Auburn, Lewis earned a career-best pass block grade of 86.9, followed by a blocking grade of 79.3 against Kentucky and an 85.5 grade against Texas A&M. On the year, Lewis played 431 snaps at left tackle, allowing just one sack and committing just three penalties.
