Gunter Earns SEC Weekly Honor
September 05, 2022 | Volleyball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State's Lilly Gunter has been selected as the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week following the Bulldogs' winning weekend at the LUV Invitational this past weekend in Nashville.
Â
This marks the fifth weekly honor of Gunter's career and the first time this season she has earned a share of the SEC's Defensive Player of the Week award.Â
Â
"Really excited for us to get another weekly award this week," said head coach Julie Darty Dennis. "Lilly [Gunter] did a fabulous job of anchoring us all weekend with her serve, pass and defense. We had a great weekend in Nashville, and these were some gritty wins that we gutted out – we could not have done it without Lilly's relentless defense and composure in the back court. Super proud of Lilly and our team and just excited to finally be home and play at The Griss this week!"
Â
Gunter was lights out on Mississippi State's back row as the junior libero amassed 5.18 digs per set as the Bulldogs went undefeated at the LUV Invitational. With Gunter's help, the Bulldogs led the SEC in digs with 280 digs and an average of 16.47 digs per set over three matches. Gunter totaled 57 digs on the weekend.Â
Â
She also sits at the No. 2 spot for the individual SEC leaders. She captured 24 of her 57 digs during the match against Oklahoma. Against Lipscomb, she earned 17 digs and 16 digs against Ball State. She also got the starting nod in all three matches during the weekend.
Â
Following the winning weekend, MSU is receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll entering the Maroon and White Invite.Â
Â
The Bulldogs return home for the first time this season for the Maroon and White Invite. The Bulldogs play host to Kennesaw State (Thursday – 6 p.m.), Houston (Friday – 6 p.m.) and South Alabama (Saturday – 3 p.m.) this weekend at the Newell-Grissom Building in Starkville. Â
