Bulldogs Sweep Lipscomb For A Third Straight Win
September 02, 2022 | Volleyball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mississippi State volleyball team continues their perfect record after sweeping Lipscomb (3-0) in the opening match of the LUV Invitational.Â
Â
MSU took the first set by a score of 25-16 and the Bulldogs kept it rolling in the second set, claiming a 25-21 victory before closing out the match 25-21, in the final frame.Â
Â
"I think we came out in set one with the best intensity and energy that I've seen in a while," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "I think it's about maintaining that energy. Sets two and three, we kind of felt like we were on cruise control. We had some peaks and valleys. There were a couple of moments where we felt down, and for us, we haven't faced a lot of moments like that. For us to come back from being down 19-17, when I called that time out I thought it was really good to see how they came out responded to that challenge. They handled it with such composure and confidence."
Â
The Bulldogs offensive attack was led by graduate Gabby Waden and senior Lauren Myrick, who registered 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Deja Robinson posted six kills of her own on just nine swings with no errors for a .667 clip.Â
Â
Shania Cromartie also recorded six kills in the match, while Sania Petties added five kills on a .333 clip.Â
Â
Lilly Gunter paced the backcourt defense with a team-high 17 digs, followed by Waden and Myrick who each recorded eight digs of their own.Â
Â
Gabby Coulter captioned the Bulldogs offense to a .312 hitting efficiency on the afternoon, dishing out 30 assists in the process.Â
Â
"I think that was in our game plan," Dennis said. "We needed to set the pins in first ball situations and using that speed. Gabby [Waden] was up and available all the time. We gave Gabby [Coulter] the green light to give way to all the balls she could in the front row. We're still trying to fine tune that connection. I thought Lauren [Myrick] did a good job of using the block and seeing it well. She did a good job of attacking their hands, attacking space, and attacking seams. Overall, proud of Gabby Coulter's offense. She's doing a good job of running the show and keeping things balanced."
Â
MSU posted nine blocks at the net, led by Robinson who captured three blocks, while Coulter and Petties posted two apiece. Myrick and Waden both added one block of their own.Â
Â
Robinson still leads in blocks in the MSU record book for a total of 416 career total blocks.Â
Â
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, taking on Oklahoma at 11 a.m. CT, before taking on Ball State at 3 p.m.Â
