Volleyball Heads To Nashville For LUV Invitational
September 01, 2022 | Volleyball
NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Mississippi State's volleyball program will look to build on an undefeated weekend when the Bulldogs head to Nashville for the LUV Invitational hosted by Lipscomb.
On Friday and Saturday (Sept. 2-3) MSU will play three matches for our second round of tournaments at the Allen Arena in Nashville. Â
"This is going to be another big weekend for the VolleyDawgs," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "Three tough opponents in one weekend on the road is surely going to be a great test and challenge for us. We had a quick turnaround this week and were able to get in the gym and work on a few fix it type things for us in practice. The general theme going into second weekend is focusing on our side of the net and continuing to get better each day and with each match we play."
The Bulldogs opened the 2022 campaign at Notre Dame last weekend with a sweep of the Irish Invitational. This weekend's tournament is State's second road and neutral test. Coverage of the tournament will be available via live stats on StatBroadcast.Â
State and ASUN Conference opponent Lipscomb will face off Friday at 11 a.m. CT to open the LUV Invitational. It will be the first meeting between the two programs in their history. Â
At 11 a.m. Saturday, MSU meets Oklahoma, which finished with a 10-17 record in 2021. The Bulldogs defeated the Sooners last fall in a 3-1 victory on Sept. 10.Â
The tournament finale is set for 3 p.m. Saturday when State takes on Ball State. The Bulldogs and Cardinals have never faced each other.Â
SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Sania Petties and SEC Setter of the Week Gabby Coulter are off to a solid start to their 2022 campaigns. During last weekend's tournament, Petties ripped off 20 kills on 28 attempts with no errors. The sophomore middle blocker is averaging 3.33 kills per set through two matches.Â
Coulter was a vital part in the 5-1 offense. The senior had a career high of 36 assists against Milwaukee and followed that with 34 assists at Notre Dame. She also tacked on another career high four kills during last weekend's Irish Invitational against Milwaukee.Â
Just two matches in, graduate Gabby Waden and senior Lauren Myrick are already producing at high levels. Waden leads the team with 28 kills and ranks second with seven blocks. Myrick has recorded 19 kills, while averaging 3.17 kills per set and three service aces.Â
