
State Falls to Samford in Midweek Action

The Diamond Dawgs return to action at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13, in College Station
Samford plated all eight of their runs in the first three innings on a pair of grand slams that were aided by a combined four walks in those innings. State battled back with three runs in the fourth and then runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth, but the Dawgs ran out of time to come back from the early deficit.
Mississippi State used four pitchers on the night with Mikey Tepper (1-2) starting and allowing six runs on two hits and four walks in 2.2 innings. Jackson Fristoe came on in the third and allowed two runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Freshman lefthander Cole Cheatham was a bright spot for the Dawgs on the mound after shutting out Samford and striking out four in three innings of relief work. Drew Talley also came on in relief and held Samford scoreless with three strikeouts in the final two innings on the mound.
The Diamond Dawgs tallied 10 hits on the night compared to nine by Samford, but State left 12 runners on base in the contests. Mississippi State had four players record multi-hit efforts, including RJ Yeager (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBIs), Hunter Hines (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Kamren James (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBIs) and Lane Forsythe (2-for-5, 1 Run). Logan Tanner and Jess Davis also recorded base hits on the night, while Luke Hancock drove in a run and walked twice.
Bottom First
Samford jumped out on top early with a pair of walks, a single and then a grand slam by centerfielder Maurice Hampton to give the host Bulldogs the lead.

Bottom Third
Samford extended its lead in the third when Colton Ledbetter and Stephen Klein both walked before Will David singled to load the bases. Andrew Bennett then hit Samford's second grand slam of the game to clear the bases and make it an 8-0 lead for the home team.

Top Fourth
Mississippi State cut into Samford's lead the next inning when the Dawgs loaded the bases on a Kamren James single, a walk by Jess Davis and an infield single by Lane Forsythe. RJ Yeager followed up by driving in the first two runs of the game for State with an RBI single through the left side that scored James and Davis. The Diamond Dawgs added their third run of the inning on an RBI groundout by Luke Hancock that plated Forsythe.

Top Fifth
The Diamond Dawgs made it a four-run game in the fifth after Kellum Clark walked and came all the way around to score on an RBI double by Kamren James on a ball that got lost in the lights at Hoover Met.

Top Seventh
A leadoff double by Hunter Hines resulted in Mississippi State closing the gap further after Kamren James drove Hines in on an RBI groundout three batters later to cut the deficit the three.
Mississippi State 5, Samford 8
Top Eighth
For the second straight inning, State got a leadoff double, this time off the bat of RJ Yeager. He later came around to score on an RBI single through the left side by Hunter Hines to make it a two-run game.

Mississippi State will travel to take on Texas A&M in a three-game SEC road series beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday, May 13, at Blue Bell Park in College Station.
