Dawgs Fall to No. 16 LSU in Series Opener

The series between Mississippi State and LSU continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State (18-13, 4-6 SEC) dropped the opening game of the series, 5-2, to No.16 LSU (21-9, 5-5 SEC) on Friday (April 8) at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville.
State jumped ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth during the pitching duel, but LSU took the lead late with four runs in the ninth to secure the win.
For the Bulldogs, Jackson Fristoe (3-3) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs – all earned – on one hit during his two-thirds of an inning. Preston Johnson came out strong from the start allowing two hits, one run, four walks and ten strikeouts to tie his career high. KC Hunt allowed no runs, one hit, one walk and two strikeouts during his two innings on the mound. Auger Brooks came on in relief to pitch one-third of an inning and allowed one run on two hits. LSU's Riley Cooper (2-1) received the win while Paul Gervase (1) earned the save.
The Bulldogs, offensively, out hit the Tigers but left eight men on base. Three different Dawgs recorded multi-hit games including Logan Tanner (2-for-4), Brad Cumbest (2-for-4) and Lane Forsythe (2-for-3). Luke Hancock collected two RBIs to take the lead in the fifth which were State's only runs of the night.

LSU scores first after three scoreless innings with the help of a Cade Doughty and a Brayden Jobert walk followed by a Jordan Thompson sacrifice which advanced Doughty to third and Jobert to second. Josh Pearson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Doughty.

The Bulldogs score two runs after Lane Forsythe singled to right field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kamren James singled to left field then advanced to second on a fielder's choice followed by a Luke Hancock single to left center which scored both Forsythe and James.

Top Ninth
LSU takes the lead late after a Hayden Travinski walk followed by a Josh Stevenson hit by pitch then both base runners advanced on a wild pitch. Tre' Morgan singled up the middle to bring home Travinski and Stevenson. Dylan Crews collected two RBIs after a home run to right center and Morgan scored.
