
State Outlasts Ole Miss in Extras To Take Series

Brad Cumbest hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th to give State the lead
Mississippi State entered the bottom of the ninth with a 6-4 lead over the Rebels, but a two-run home run by Jacob Gonzalez knotted the game at six apiece to force extras. The score remained 6-6 until the home run by Cumbest in the 11th gave State a one-run advantage, followed by a 1-2-3 inning by KC Hunt in the bottom to clinch the victory and series.
Each team used five pitchers over the course of the nearly four-and-a-half-hour game with KC Hunt (2-1) picking up the win for the Dawgs after shutting Ole Miss out for the final 2.2 innings. Cade Smith started and allowed four runs on four hits and struck out six in 5.1 innings, followed by a scoreless outing by Jackson Fristoe (2.0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 SO). Pico Kohn struck out two and allowed two runs on two hits in an inning-plus of work before Hunt closed out the final two-plus innings.
Four different Bulldogs recorded multi-hit games with home runs by RJ Yeager (2-for-5, 2 RBI), Hunter Hines (2-for-6, 3 RBI) and Cumbest (2-for-5, RBI). Logan Tanner also had two base knocks in the win to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. State out-hit Ole Miss, 11-7, in the series finale.

Ole Miss cut the deficit to two in the bottom half of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, but Jackson Fristoe stranded two runners in scoring position after striking out Chatagnier for the final out.
