March 08, 2022 | Baseball
The two teams are scheduled for a rematch at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, in Biloxi
Stinnett (2-0) started on the mound and retired 15 of the 20 batters he faced, including 12 strikeouts, in five full innings to earn the win for the Dawgs. Brandon Smith came on in relief to start the sixth and allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. Pico Kohn entered the game with one out in the eighth after Texas Tech had cut the lead to five and closed out the game after striking out three and retiring all five batters he faced in 1.2 innings.
Mississippi State trailed 1-0 after the first three and a half innings, but the bottom of the fourth saw MSU take the lead after 12 different Diamond Dawgs came to the plate as State scored nine runs on six hits, including a three-run home run by freshman Hunter Hines. The Dawgs tacked on runs in the sixth and the eighth, while the MSU bullpen held off a late push by the Red Raiders to close out the victory.
Texas Tech starter Chase Hampton (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs – all earned – on two hits and two walks. The Red Raiders used a total of five pitchers on the night.
Hines led the Dawgs offensively with a 3-for-4 night at the dish with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. In the last five games, Hines is hitting a team-best .550 (11-for-20) with three home runs, two doubles and eight RBIs.
Mississippi State totaled 10 hits in the game compared to eight by the Red Raiders. Kamren James and Tanner Leggett each had two hits apiece on the night, while State also got production out of Luke Hancock, Kellum Clark and Davis Meche, who each had one hit in the contest.
MSU is scheduled to take on No. 11 Texas Tech once again on Wednesday, March 9, at MGM Park in Biloxi. First pitch on Wednesday is set for 5 p.m. CT.
