Women’s Tennis Falls At South Carolina 4-3
March 25, 2022 | Women's Tennis
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mississippi State women's tennis team fell 4-3 on the road at No. 42 South Carolina on Friday afternoon.
Alexandra Mikhailuk, Chloé Cirotte and Marta Falceto each claimed singles victories for the 54th-ranked Bulldogs, who dropped to 10-9 overall and 1-6 in Southeastern Conference play.
Mikhailuk took down 86th-ranked Gamecock Elise Mills 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4. She continued her hot streak and has now won three-straight SEC singles matches.
Falceto defeated Gracie Mulville in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 while Cirotte downed Megan Davies 3-6, 6-0 and took the third set in a tiebreaker 7-6(3).
MSU's Emmanouela Antonaki fell to No. 2 Sarah Hammer 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, No. 123 Tamara Racine lost to South Carolina's 61st-ranked Ayana Akli 6-3, 6-3 and Bulldog Alessia Tagliente dropped her match to Misa Malkin 7-6(5), 6-1.
"We put up a good fight singles but it just wasn't a complete enough performance on our part," said head coach DaryI Greenan. "I am proud of Marta for picking up another SEC win and I was impressed with Alex earning a ranked win in a tough three-set battle. Chloé's win after being down 5-2 in the third (set) was also huge. Unfortunately, three wins doesn't get us the team victory."
The Gamecocks also took the doubles point as Malkin and Mulville topped Mikhailuk and Tagliente 6-1 and Akli and Ana Cruz defeated Antonaki and Falceto 6-3.
"With one of our top players (Magda Adaloglou) out of the lineup, we don't have much margin for error," said Greenan. "South Carolina definitely played better doubles than us today."
South Carolina moved to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The Bulldogs head to Gainesville next to take on No. 16 Florida on Sunday at noon CT.
