State Powers Past Southern With Five Home Runs

For the first time since 2009, State hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third
MSU posted four multi-run innings in the second, third, fourth and eighth innings. For the first time since 2009, State hit back-to-back-to-back home runs from Kellum Clark, Brad Cumbest and RJ Yeager in the bottom of the third to advance the Bulldog's score to 9-1.
For State, Pico Kohn (1-0) started and earned the win after allowing three hits and three strikeouts while on the mound. Four Bulldog pitchers followed Kohn - Drew Talley, Brandon Smith, Brooks Auger and Jackson Fristoe for a combined 10 strikeouts. Brandon Smith and Auger both pitched two scoreless innings while Jackson Fristoe struck out the side in the ninth for the Diamond Dawgs.
Four different Dawgs recorded multi-hit games, including Hunter Hines, who was 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Kellum Clark was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kamren James went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs while Brad Cumbest also went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and an RBI. RJ Yeager hit a solo home and Logan Tanner went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Bottom Second
Mississippi State scored first after Jess Davis doubled to right center field to bring in Brad Cumbest and RJ Yeager, who scored on an error made by Southern centerfielder, AJ Walter. Kamren James hit a homer to left center to bring in Davis.

Top Third
Southern added a run after Justin Wiley walked and JJ Rollon doubled to advance Wiley to third. Quincy Smith flied out to left field that advanced Rollon to third and Wiley home.

Bottom Third
State's hitting continued to earn five more runs. Logan Tanner started the inning off with a double to left, followed by Hunter Hines single to score Tanner. Kellum Clark homered down the line to earn two RBIs. Brad Cumbest and RJ Yeager then hit back-to-back home runs.

Bottom Fourth
The Bulldogs scored two runs from a Logan Tanner double followed by a Hunter Hines single to the right side that brought in Von Siebert. Kellum Clark walked followed by a Brad Cumbest walk that advanced Clark to second. Clark scored on a wild pitch which moved Matt Corder to third then scored on an error by Southern catcher, Taj Porter.

Top Fifth
Southern closed some of the gap after scoring four runs. The inning started with a Justin Wiley double and a JJ Rollon single that advanced Wiley to third. During Quincy Smith's at bat, Rollon stole second and Wiley scored. Smith singled followed by Taj Porter's double to score Rollon then Jalon Mack doubled to bring in Smith and Porter for two RBIs.

Bottom Eighth
The Bulldogs scored two runs from a Luke Hancock single to right followed by a Hunter Hines homer down the right field line.
Mississippi State 14, Southern 5
Mississippi State will host Alabama this weekend at Dudy Noble Field with the series opener set for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 25, in Starkville. The first two games of the series will be broadcast on SEC Network+. Sunday's finale will air on SEC Network at 2 p.m.
