State Stays Perfect At Home With Doubleheader Sweep
February 12, 2022 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE - Mississippi State women's tennis team extended their non-conference home match winning streak to 51 with a doubleheader sweep over North Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs blanked the Lions 4-0 in the first match and won the second 4-1 to improve to 6-1 on the season.
"We did well and we played well considering all things," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "There was definitely some adversity. We are going to face more of it as the season goes on, it's inevitable. Each time that we find a way to get it done under adverse conditions, it just makes us stronger."
MSU earned the doubles points in both matches and have now won every doubles point this spring.
In doubles play, the No. 24 duo of Magda Adaloglou and Chloé Cirotte picked up a pair of wins by a score of 6-2 in each to extend their winning streak to eight matches.
The senior duo of Emmanouela Antonaki and Tamara Racine earned a win in the first match of the day, and similarly extended their winning streak to seven matches.
For the second match of the day, Antonaki teamed up with Alexandra Mikhailuk and won 6-1 after falling behind 1-0. They are now 3-0 on the season when paired up together.
Antonaki now sits alone in seventh place with 61 career doubles victories at MSU having passed Elna De Villers (2005-09).
Singles play was equally successful for the Bulldogs on Saturday.
No. 107 Adaloglou earned the clinching win of the first match over Payton Andrews 6-4, 6-1 despite trailing 3-2 in the first set. This victory moves Adaloglou into a tie with Jasmine Lee (2015-17) and Jackie Holden (1986-89) for third all-time at MSU in career singles victories with 72.
"It makes me feel very happy, very proud of myself, and of the team of course," Adaloglou said. "It has been a long journey here. I am more than happy that I got this accomplishment. I do my best to represent the Bulldogs in the right way, and it pays off."
Cirotte continued her dominant play with two singles victories by an astounding combined margin of 24-2. She has now won nine of her last 10 singles matches.
"In singles play, I am focused on my plan, my game and improving.," Cirotte said. "I am working every day and am giving my best for the team. I try every time to get the point … I will keep working hard, have a good mood and be here for the team."
No. 72 Antonaki got back to her winning ways in singles by earning a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory over Andrews.
Mikhailuk clinched the second match for State over Kalais Going 6-1, 6-1 and is now 3-0 when playing in the No. 4 spot of the lineup.
Freshman Alessia Tagliente added another win to her singles ledger after defeating Nicole Reilly 6-2, 6-0 to move to 5-0 in singles play in her collegiate career.
With the losses, UNA dropped to 0-8 on the season.
